PROSPECTIVE LAMBING.

The number of lambs docked next year should constitute a. record (says a southern paper). To begin with ■440,000 fewer ewes have been killed * than last year, and in the 1935 season 242,000 more ewes were mated than in the preceding season. The 1936 figures of ewes mated have not yet been published. However, the total must show a larger progressive increase than for some years, and as a consequence the lambing and the lamb export for 1936-37 should he larger than, in any previous year. It is interesting to note that 10 years ago —in 1926-27—breeding ewes numbered 14,831,730, or practically 3,000,000 fewer than in 1935. The increase in the three years following 1927 was extraordinarily heavy—to 17,564,000. Since that- year, however, the number has been practically stationary, and over the five years increased only bv 250,000. The probabilities are that "for the first time on record more than 18,000,000 ewes have been mated this season.
