MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

THEFT OF BICYCLES. IMPRISONMENT IMPOSED. In the Court on Saturday, before Mr J; L. Stoat, S.M., Albert Leonard Hansen, engine-driver,. 37 rears of age, was charged that, on June 23, at Palmerston North, he stole a lady’s bicycle valued at £B, the property of Agues Collis. He was also charged that, on or about June 25, he stole a bicycle valued at £3 lUs, the property of Alan Jewett. He was further charged that, on June 27, he stole a bicycle belonging .to Russell Vivian Carter, of the value of £3. Accused pleaded guilty to all the charges. Detective-Sergeant Biekerdiko stated that accused stole the bicycles from various parts of the city and sold them to local agents for £l, 17s (5d and los respectively. These cases were difficult to detect, and the owners were often put to great incOnvenuienee because of their loss. Accused had been in trouble .before. Accused said he was out of work and could not find employment. “You can’t steal other people’s property, even if you are out of work,” said the Magistrate in sentencing accused to two months’ imprisonment on each .charge, the sentences to be cumulative.

UNUSUAL CHARGE. Two residents of Palmerston North, who went to Pahiatua recently to shoot wild pigs, were charged with wilfully shooting three pigs, of a value of £lB los, the property of William John Jones. Mr Biekerdiko stated that defendants saw the three pigs near some bush and shot them. The pigs were tame ones. Complaints were made and defendants were interviewed by the police. At first they denied killing the pigs, but later admitted it. They were under the impression that the pigs were wild.

The Magistrate said that the men should have taken precautions and found out whither the pigs were wild. They would have to make good the damage. Each defendant was convicted and ordered to repay half the value of the pigs at the rate of 30s a month. Their names were suppressed on the application of one of the defendants.
