BASKETBALL.
REPRESENTATIVE AIATC'HES
Two representative teams from the Horowhonua Basketball Association visited Palmerston North on Saturday, playing matches with teams representing the Alanawatu Association. The visitors won by 24 goals to 19 in the A grade, but lost 30—21 in the li grade match. Speed at intercepting, combined with sure passing, gained the day for the Horowhonua A team. In the first half they had a run of success that gave them a 13—8 lead at half-time, but. the second spell was even and each side scored 11 goals. The referee was Aliss C. AV. Vautier and the teams were as follow: Alanawatu.—Forwards: P. Payne. J. jOlevely, J. AViniata. Centres: AI. Reid, O. Young, B. Alnson. Defence: AI. Waldegrave, M. Harvey, N. Alilverton.
Horowhenua.—Forwards: E. MacDonald, L. lvarauti, T. Fogden. Centres: J. Jacobs, J. Butt, R. Thompson. Defence: J. Swensson, C. Jacobs, N. O’Donnell. Goals were scored by the following:—Alanawatu: P. Payne 8, J. AViniata 5, J. Clevely 6. Horowhenua : E. MacDonald 14, T. Fogden 5, L. Karauti 5.
Alannwatu’s superiority in the forward division was the deciding factor in the B match. At half-time the home team were leading 16—13 and they increased tlieir winning margin in the second spell to make the final score 30—21. The referee was Aliss F. Ross. The teams were as follow: — Alanawatu..—Forwards: B. Hansen, N. Terry, E. AVoodd. Centres: B. Russell, P. Simpson. F. Eglinton. Defence: R. Leask, Y. Hancock, AI. Beavis.
Horowhenua.—Forwards: J. Roydhouse, AI. Alilroy, AI. Johnston. Centres: E. Flutev, V. Taylor, B. AA’ake--1 in. Defence: B. Blenkhorn, L. Carson. K. Johnston. Goals were scored by the following :—Alanawatu: N. Terry 12, B. Hansen 7, E. AVoodd 11. Horowhenua: AL Alilroy 8, J. Roydhouse 7, AI. Johnston 6.
P. Cadogan, who was picked to play in the Alanawatu game, strained an ankle in a prior game and was unable to take part. After the games the members of the Alanawatu teams entertained the visitors at afternoon tea.
