PAHIATUA
PAHIATUA, July 18. The Tararua Electric Power Board met at Eketahuna yesterday, Mr J. D. Wilson presiding. On the recommendation of the finance committee it was decided that the board provide for the Pahiatua maintenance engineer a light truck for service in that district. The secretary-manager said the truck was to he purchased from an Eketahuna firm for £370. A letter was received from Mr J. G. Green tendering his resignation from the board’s employ. The chairman moved that the resignation be accepted with regret and it was decided to record the board's appreciation of Dir Green’s services. It was decided to employ Mr A. L. Ford, of the Opunake Power Board, as maintenance engineer for the Pahiatua area at a salary of £3OO per annum. The chairman moved that all guarantees for extension in future he required for an eight-year term instead of five. — Carried. The secretary-manager and the engineer recommended that the hoard dispense with the fixed wages for linesmen and in future pay the award rate of 2s 2d per hour and 2s o£d for assistant linesmen, and that one faultman be appointed to each area at a wage of £5 ss, those terms to apply until the new award became operative.—Carried. Hamua met Eketahuna Old Boys at Rugby at the Pahiatua Showgrounds to-day, the former winning by 11 points to 3. The match was late in starting and Old Boys played two men short. At half-time Hamua were leading by 3 points to nil, H. Wolland having scored a try. B. Bradbury added Hamua’s second try and H. Cooper conyerted it. Twentyman secured the third try and just before the call of time Pryce scored for Old Boys. J.P.A. Bro. H. Fisher presided at a meeting of the Druids’ Lodge. It was decided to bring the honours board up to date and the matter of an obituary board was also discussed, two senior members present each donating £1 to the cost. P.D.P. Bro. Taylor presented the secretary, Bro. J. E. Macdonald, with the P.D.P.Jewe), and spoke of the services rendered the lodge by Bro. Macdonald during his term as D.P. The jubilee of the Methodist Church will be celebrated next month, 50 years having passed since the first Methodist services were held in Pahiatua. Airangements are being made to celebrate the occasion in a worthy manner. The president of the conference (Rev. E. P. Blamires) will conduct services in the King’s Theatre and will open the new Sunday school hall now nearing completion in Princess Street. During the jubilee the pioneers and former residents of the district will be honoured at an “old folks” at home, in addition to which a large jubilee banquet is arranged to take place in the Foresters’ Hall. . Two new members or the x ahiatua Golf Club were elected at the last meeting of the committee, Messrs W. J. Dean and G. H, J. Hill. Regret was expressed at the resignation ol Mr and Mrs J. G. Green through thenleaving the district. It was decided to write to Mr Kernick expressing the club’s appreciation of his generosity in donating two handsome cups. It has been decided that these cups be competed lor annually for the intermediate and junior championships. A decision to liberate trout try in the Makuri River was made at a meeting of the Pahiatua sub-committee of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society to-day At 10.45 o’clock to-night the Eire Brigade was called to the residence of Miss Hodgson in Tyndall Street. A candle had set a mattress alight and the llames scorched a wall, lhe outbreak was under control before the brigade arrived. A junior lied Cross class has been established at the Mangamaire School and is making good progress. , Only two competitors took part in the road cycling race to-day, which was from Pahiatua to Mangamaire and back. L. Groubc won by a length from L. Pearce. While racing, Pearce had the misfortune to injure a hand. He bent down to adjust a nut. and his band became caught in the spokes. Constable L. W. C. Le Comte, who has been stationed at Masterton for the past ten years, has received notice of his transfer on promotion to second officer at Pahiatua. He will take the place of Constable W. Houston, who leaves next week for Nuhaka.
