(From Our Own Correspondent.) APITI. July 20. The annual Oddfellows’ ball was held on Wednesday and as usual was a great social success. The ball was artistically decorated with blue and gold streamers. Balloons and Chinese lanterns added a further bright note of colour. A first-class orchestra from town supplied the music, whilst extras were played by Mrs Kearney and Mr K. Scarle. The members of the lodge looked after their visitors royally, when they sat down to partake of a sumptuous supper later in the evening. The winners of the. spot waltz were Mr Shapleski and Miss Duffy. Confetti and streamer dances added to the gaiety of the scone. The members of the Women’s Institute committee met at the home of Mrs J. Jensen (vice-president) on Saturday afternoon. Mrs C. M. Stanley presided and apologies for absence were received from Mrs L. Gould and Miss Strahan. Mrs Gould also sent a message conveying grateful thanks for the kind letter sent on behalf of her fellow committee members, expressing sympathy during her recent illness. Arrangements for the August meeting wore discussed. In deference to the wishes of Mr and Mrs E. Clifton who do not' desire a big function as suggested it lias been decided to bold a gift afternoon for Mrs Clifton. This will bo held irt conjunction with the usual monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute on August 4. The meeting will be open to all the ladies of the district who would like to give a gitt to Mrs Clifton and all will be welcome. The remits for the conference to be held in Dunedin shortly were fully discussed and the delegate instructed how to vote. In, handing over the banner to Mrs Harland, Apiti’s delegate, the president expressed the good wishes of all for a happy and profitable visit to tile southern city. Future programmes were tentatively discussed and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to Mrs Jensen for her kindly hospitality. The Apiti School football team made the trip to Waituna on Saturday to play I lie school there. Our doughty Apiti warriors managed to win, after gruelling battle, 14 to 8. Victor Wildbore scored II points, while the remaining three were scored by Geoff Payton. A bountiful lunch was provided by the generous Waituna ladies to which the boys did full justice. The referee was Mr A. Shannon. There arc still about four matches to play in these games for the shield. The seniors played Rangiwahia on the local ground and the game resulted in a draw, 6—6. D. Kearney had the misfortune to sustain a severe cut over, an eye, which necessitated medical attention, two stitches being inserted. C. McKenzie was also hurt and had to leave the field. Several Rangiwahia players were also hurt slightly. The game, however, was fast and interesting. Mr C. Osborne had the whistle. ’The juniors played Rangiwahia on the Rangiwahia ground. Apiti were beaten 9 to nil. The game was a good sporting one, though Apiti played a man short Mr Cooper was the referee. The newly inducted vicar of this parochial district, Rev. F. E. Floury, took h» first service at the Apiti Anglican Church on Sunday afternoon. There was a large congregation and a warm welcome was extended to the vicar and his wife. Mr and Mrs Payton have returned from an extended motor trip through the North Island.
