GIRLS SAVED.
DRIFTING IN BOAT. TAUIIANGA, July 14. Three Maori girls were saved from being swept out to sea from the Tauranga harbour entrance on Sunday afternoon by Mr Len Oliver, who was returning in his launch from a fishing trip. The tide was running out strongly, and Mr Oliver noticed a boat in the current about half a mile away. The girls were waving frantically, and he went to ascertain the cause. He found the girls in a 16-i’oot boat, exhausted alter a vain effort to row against the current. They had an anchor, but the rope was too short. Consequently, the boat was being swept to sea. It was getting dark, and the girls’ experience may have been an unenviable one before they could have got back to the harbour. They were towed far enough to enable them to reach Matakana Island, where they belonged.
