NAVAL EXPANSION. SINGAPORE, July 14. The establishment of a strong British naval squadron at Singapore is indicated by an official announcement to-day stating that a'substantial portion of tiro £2.000,000 extra vote for the Singapore base recently approved by Parliament will he spent on building accommodation for warships’ crews. Playing fields and recreation facilities for sailors at Singapore, the construction of wharves, stores, and basins for victualling and munitioning warships have Also been approved. The need of a naval establishment at Singapore to co-operate "with the Indies, China, Australian, and New Zealand squadrons has long been recognised by Singapore naval men. At present only the monitor Terror and small war craft are at Singapore.
