JAPANESE TRADE.
AUSTRALIAN OVERTURES. "tOKIO, July 11. It is learned that Sir Henry Gullctt. Australian Minister of Charge of Trade Treaties, proposed to Mr Murai (Japanese Consul-General) that Australia and Japan should suspend respectively the now licensing mca- ■ sure and the trade protection law and then proceed to negotiate a trade agreement. Japan is considering the proposal, but is likely to reject it because it regards the status quo ante as not being restored unless Australia also suspends the new duties of M ay. For that reason the present proposal is unfair and Japan is not inclined to resume negotiations except on an equal footing.
