REFUSAL OF LICENSES.
AUSTRALIAN JOCKEYS AND BOOK-MAKERS.
Developments similar to those of 1932, when jockeys and bookmakers did not receive their licenses for the new racing season, are possibilities in connection with the coining season, says the Sydney Referee. There are whisperings in the inner Turf circles in Melbourne of sensational refusals. There have been mysterious happenings over the last 12 months. Horses heavily backed by stable and public have failed, to develop form suddenly and win at'long odds when subsequently- well supported, but not by the stable. Some bookmakers have laid inordinate amountts against these losers, but their volumes suggest they were forewarned when the win came along. Whether the V.R.C. suspects collusion is not known. Secrets arc being closely guarded. But the names of at least one jockey and several bookmakers have been associated in sorious charges. Apparently officials have been unable to establish the proof that would warrant disqualifications, but they have sufficient evidence to prove conclusively that, there are certain happenings which are derogatory to the Turf. • In such circumstances the effective weapon of the authorities is the refusal of licenses to those known to bo guilty; and it is said that this axe will fall on the heads of some when they apply at license time this month for renewals. The number, however, will be comparatively few compared with the big clcan-up of 1932.
