FIELD DAY AT KARERE

FARMERS INSPECT PASTURES.

There was a good attendance, yesterday, at the first field day conducted by the Kairanga Young Farmers Club at the farms of Messrs J. Caliesen and Voss Bros., Ku re-re. The chairman, Mr D. Fraser, and the secretary Mr B. Crystall, assisted by Messrs I. Fraser and R. Voss, were in charge of the party, and interesting; discussions took place with Mr L. W. Gorman, of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture. Pastures inspected by the party were Government certified white clover, Montgomery certified red clover, Russian barley, a 15-year-old pasture of “mother” rye, and two paddocks, one of pedigree "and one of Government certified rye grass sown with mustard and a little white clover. While at Mr Callesen’s property the party saw an interesting demonstration of stooking clover in preparation for threshing. This method is similar to that seen by Mr Voss during a recent visit to Denmark. Some of the pastures visited were sown with seed specially selected and grown by the Department of Agriculture, there being only a limited quantity of this seed in New Zealand.
