CRIPPLED CHILDREN
USE OF. LORD NUFFIELD’S GIFT. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL. June 29. That the Lord Nuffield fz;it't of £60,000 to aid the crippled children of New Zealand was not {jiving the benefit it should was the view expressed by Mr J. Hargcst, M.P., at the annual meeting of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children’s Society to-night. The fund was held in trust, he said, and the income, owing to the low rate of interest, was insufficient when distributed over all branches of the society to provide treatment for even the most urgent eases. _ “In mv opinion,” said Air Idargest, “Lord Nuff’old made the gift with the intention that it should be used to Imlp the children i; to-day and not that it should go into storage. The interest earned at present is totally inadequate but now is the time that it should be used when we are trying to alleviate the suffering of children who were not aided in the past. The money will become stagnant if it is he. so closely guarded. We should petition the trustees to do something in the matter, and do it quickly.
The retiring president (Mr S. McDonald) explained that a conference to be held next month with the purpose of establishing co-ordination between the public hospitals. Department of Health and Education Departments and the Crippled Child-on’s Socety, would no doubt settle all difficulties.
