BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL.

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION. The report of the executive of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School Parents’ Association, to be presented to the annual meeting of parents and friends, states:—-“We again wish to place on record our appreciation to all who have contributed to the success that has attended the executive’s efforts. A perusal of the balancesheet discloses that the gross income for the year was £IBB 17s id, which, added to £sl 7s 6d carried forward on May 31, 1935, gave the association a' working capital of £240 os Id. The total expenses for the year were £195 13s Bd, but ol this £l5O was paid as a progress payment on the sports pavilion now in course of construction, and there remains a credit balance in the bank of £44 11s sd. Incidentally, we may say that since the closing of our books at May 31, 1930, further contributions to our funds have been made, and these ensure that tlio sports pavilion will be completely paid lor after the Government subsidy is received. The association at this moment is free of debt. For the gala day the gross receipts were £llß 12s lid and the expenses £2B 7s 4d, leaving a net profit of £9O 5s 7d. Of the gross amount £3B Is 9d was obtained by the salo of badges, £8 18s 9d by donations, £8 10s from afternoon tea and supper, and £7 9s Gd from the dance. In addition £35 Is Gd was taken by ■the various stalls, and the coinpetiitions and games run by the masters and boys of the school gave a return !of £2O 11s sd. In addition, Form 111 A subscribed 9s Gd towards the proceeds of the last Hag bridgo evening, so the masters and boys were therefore responsible lor £57 18s of the receipts. In connection with the year’s work, two card afternoons for ! the ladies and two flag bridge evenings have been hold. The gross returns for the card afternoons were £3l 3s 9d, the expenses being only £1 ss. The flag bridge evenings gave a gross return of £l4 18s 3d, the expenses being 18s sd. These four card parties gave the association a net profit of £46 2s. The smallness of the expenses is due to the generosity of the ladies themselves, who gave practically everything that was required, both for the afternoon teas and suppers for the bridge parties. It will be noted that during the year 165 parents paid their fees to our association, the total received being £2U 12s Gd compared with 65 members who joined in 1934-35 giving a return of £8 2s Gd. The improvement is mainly due to an excellent card system which invited a direct answer as to whether a parent intended to join the association or not. In spite of the improvement there are still approximately 230 parents who have not yet joined the association. Notwithstanding the increased membership, it is disappointing to find so many parents taking little or no interest in the affairs of this association, formed

solely for the improvement of the amenities of the school. Since the formation of the association in 1923, it has been responsible for excellent work in and around the school, and there is no reason to believe that future committees will not keep the good work going. W eshould like to see every household that has a hoy at school represented on the financial membership of the association. The total subscription is only 2s 6d per annum, and it would be a distinct encouragement if heads of families weresufficiently interested to show their appreciation by at least joining the association, even if unable to attend the various functions organised in the interests of their boys. Still, we are thankful at the improvement that has taken place, and would like to place on record our thanks to those parents who have assisted us during the past year. Our thanks are also due to the boaj.d of governors whose co-operation has always heen at our disposal when sought for.”
