TROTTING AT NIGHT.

PROPOSALS UNDER WAY. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, June 26. Provided the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club is successful in obtaining four of the additional totalisator permits likely to be distributed by the Government next season, it will seriously consider instituting night trotting during the summer period at Addington. The overwhelming success of trotting meetings held at night in Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane has inspired members of the club’s committee to consider applying for four additional permits with the object of allocating these to night trotting. That would mean that the New Zealand Metropolitan Club would retain its' present quota of permits for day racing. The officials believe that December, January, and February would be suitable months for holding meetings in the evenings. The project would enable them to make more use of the huge and expensive plant that at present is required only on thirteen days in a year, and thus also obtain increased revenue to further the interests of the sport generally. The installation of a lighting system to floodlight the course and enclosures, and around the totalisators, is expected to cost approximately LIOOO, but it is thought to be a sale and good investment. Provided the club is successful in securing the four additional permits the officials will proceed to develop the scheme and to mark the inauguration of night trotting in New Zealand they intend to have new electric totalisators installed in time to be used on that occasion.
