P.N. DX CLUB

MANAWATU BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Alanawatu branch of the New Zealand. DX Club was held on the lltli inst. Nil* Cowlishaw presided. The business was of a very light nature, and was soon dealt with. Mr Morgan (secretary) reported that the recent dance had proved a success and it had exceeded the committee’s expectations. For more half an hour the members wore entertained by Mr Cowlishaw and Mr Vining, who indulged in a “discussion,” much to the interest of the ,listeners. Two of the club’s listeners are not satisfied with logging 100-watt stations, hut they log 50-watt ones. These are Mr G. Dalefield and Mr F. Coleman. Mr D. Cutlibert delivered an interesting lecture on “Directional Aerials and Their Uses.” Mr Robson* is to he congratulated on being made president of the New Zealand DX Club ; this is the third time lie has been elected to that position. Details are as follow of the VK3 competition, which will take place from midnight on July 5 to 2 a.in. on July 6. There will he a number of stations on the air using a low power, the logging of which will earn high marks for the successful DX listener. There will also be a number of key stations on given frequencies, using the full allowed input, from which a guide may be obtained in the search for the more voluble ones. The following is the list of points to he awarded : Stations using 20 watts and over, lpt; stations using 15 watts and under 20, 2pts; stations using 10 watts and under 15, 4pts; stations using less than 10 watts, spts; hidden stations, additional score of 5 pts; standard of reporting, maximum of spts; competitors under 18 (first year also), 10 per cent, added; all lady competitors, 10 per cent. added; branches competing, 100 per cent, active strength-, lOpts; 75 per cent, active strength. 7pts; 50 per cent, of active strength. spts; (laylight reception of 3BY, lOpts. The trophy for this competition is in the form of a polished blac.kwood shield with the emblems of the New Zealand DX Club and the Wireless Institute of Australia, surrounded by ten or twelve small sliields to bear the name of the branch. This competition should prove the most popular and interesting chance for DX listeners to put their branch in the forefront.

The results of this month’s competitions are as follow : Overseas.—F. Coleman, WEXL (50w) and G. Dalefield. WOOD (50), 1 ; J. Todd, WEBR, G. Clemoes, WDNG, and J. Aveson, WDNC (all 100 watts), 2.

Juniors.—F. Coleman, WEXL, 1 ; J. Aveson, WDNC, 2; C. Schwabe, IvFBK 3. Teams Shield.—J. P. Cowlishaw’s team, 42pts; G. Vining’s team, 3Spts; I. Todd’s team, 33)-pts. Short-wave Trophy.—R. Lacey, G6LK, 1; J. P. Cowlishaw and A. Newth, KAIAN, 2. This month also saw the end of the six-monthly competitions, namely juniors, short-wave and teams. The winner of the Junior Cup was Mr F. Coleman with 15 points; this enthusiast has been in the club just over 12 months and this is a god performance for a junior. Mr J. Avison was runner-up with pts. The teams shield was won bv Mr Cowlishaw’s team while Mr G. Vining’s team was second. The short-wave trophy was won by Mr R. Lacey with 17pts. This member has been vei*v enthusiastic on the short-wave band and lias some very fine verifications. Mr H. Newth was runner-up with 4-Jpts. - On Monday evening . the combined social committee and tlie club’s Radio Revellers made a surprise visit to Mr and Mrs Gooding, of Foxton Line, on behalf of the Manawatu branch, to make a presentation to Mrs Cooding in apnreoiation of her services to the branch. Mr Morgan (secretary), in makthe presentation, said that Mrs Gooding’s efforts had been greatly apnreciated and it was through Mr Gooding that the branch’s dances had been the success they were. Mrs Gooding thanked the committee for the present. The evening war, spent in dancing and Airs Gooding played a pianoforte solo, while Mr A. Keene (saxophone) and Mr D. Cuthhert (violin) contributed items ; Mrs Seeley, Mr Vining and All* Gooding obliged with tap dances.
