HALCOMBE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) HALCOMBE, June 22,

The committee of the Tokorangi Maori Labour Party held an enjoyable evening in the Jubilee Hall. The function took the form of a euchre party and dance with items interspersed. There was a record crowd of card players, over sixty participating. The winners proved to bo Mr F. Kiumra and Mrs T. Searancke, with Miss Q. Kane and Mr 11. To Oka filling second places. These players wore the recipients of excellent prizes. The dance was very capably run by Messrs H. Searancke and H. Chase, joint M.C.’s, 'and to the strains of a professional orchestra, a largo crowd spent a happy evening. Novelty dances were won as follow: —Monte Carlo, Miss hi. Anderson and Mr Chambers; Lucky Gav Gordons, Miss Clark and Mr S. Paranihi. During the evening tho natives put on a splendidly executed poi dance and a stirring haka. Some Maori songs were .also rendered, these items being thoroulily enjoyed. At a suitable juncture Mr R. Searancke, addressing the gathering, thanked all who had helped to make the function such an outstanding success and honed that, when a further evening was held, there would again be a large crowd preedit. He explained that the funds raised were to be devoted to renovating meeting houses.

A pleasant evening was spent in the Jubilee Hall on Friday night when members if the Halcomho Women’s Institute cn'ortained their husbands and friends at a card party, the game being “flag 500.” The winning tabic consisted of Mrs A. MeXae, Miss J. AfeN'ae, Mr T. Vile, and Mr W. .Stewart. The travelling flag was also won by Miss J. MeXae. After the presentation of the trophies, all present gathered rounda cheerful log fire, where supper was served. The smiling faces and cheerful conversation revealed that the evening was greatly enjoyed by one and all. It is the intention of the Women’s Institute to repeat the function in the near future.
