“A STUPID ACT.”
CASE AT DUNEDIN
Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, June 22,
“This was a stupid, silly act, showing a very perverted sense of humour which, unfortunately, is common among bovs,’’ said the Magistrate (Mr H. W. Bundle) when George De Lacy Fenwick, aged 20, a medical student, appeared for sentence on a charge of sending a false message to the police to the effect that Dr. Merrmgton had been murdered at Knox College. .Senior-Sergeant Packer said that further inquiries had been made at Selwyn College, but all that could be ascertained was that a number of students were standing about when it was suggested that the police should be rung, Fenwick apparently taking the responsibility for tlie whole affair. Counsel said the students at Selwyn College were discussing practical jokes, also rivalry between Selwyn and Knox Colleges. One suggested that it would be a good joke to ring the police stating that Dr. Merrington had been murdered and defendant, acting on the impulse, carried it out. He was perfectly frank with the police afterwards and admitted the offence. The Magistrate adjourned the ease tor twelve months, leaving defendant to be dealt with by the college authorities.
