FLOOD WATERS RECEDE.

ROADWAY NEAR RANGIOTU. WHIROKINO STILL BLOCKED. The main highway between Tiakitahuna and Rangiotu was clear of water this morning, and the flood was steadily receding from the adjacent land, except the depression formed by The Taonui basin. Drains alongside t lie roadway remained full of water. Though left safe within a brick sty, several pigs on a property in the Taonui basin made their way out. Their sty has been found empty, and it is believed that they have been drowned. The Whirokino highway, south of Foxton, is still blocked, there being a depth of five feet of water there thi» morning.

COLEY'S BEND. FLOOD DAMAGE AVERTED. (From Our Own Correspondent). SHANNON, June 18. A gang of men combated the flood water at Coley’s bond last night. Some time ago a temporary bank was erected at a weak place only to a level to combat small floods. When the height of the flood was known yesterday, endeavours were made to strengthen the old bank, as the height of the new bank was considered insufficient. At 11 p.m. last night the old breach broke, allowing the water to come on to the new bank.

Fortunately, the new bank bad sufficient height with the aid of a few sand bags to retain the water. The gang dispersed at 4.50 this morning and there is now no danger unless the river rises again. EXTENT”OF DAMAGE. Comment was* made at the monthly meeting of the Makerua Drainage Board, yesterday, bv Trustee W. Jackson, that the board appeared at the moment to have suffered only slightly. Other members of the board agreed with the view, the chairman (Trustee H. Seifert) remarking, however, that more damage would be revealed when the flood waters subsided. The board decided to sow on the new bank at Coley’s bend in grass in August. It was not considered necessary to fence the new work.
