TE AUTE BEAT HIGH SCHOOL. A THRILLING GAME. Characteristic inter-eehool Rugby was witnessed at the Showgrounds .yesterday afternoon, when the Te Ante College first fifteen heat Palmerston North Bovs’ High School first fifteen l>v 1-f points to nil. The game was played under fine conditions, but the strong sun had a'notable effect on the teams, especially the local boys, who had to face it in the first spell. Te Ante won the game because their forwards hooked the ball consistently in the scrums n.-id gave their fast backline every opportunity to score. The line-oiits were evenly contested and both teams tackled with deadly earnest. The High School inside backs, La.w and Howell, tried to cut in too often, and they would have been wise to have sent the leather out to the wings. Edwards and Robbie, who were both potential scoring players. The packs were evenly matched, the outstanding forward on the ground being Raureti, the Te Ante captain, who, playing a. roving game, gave tile School inside backs little opportunity to try anything. Beard played a faultless game at full-back for School, some of his line-kicks being remarkable for a schoolboy. The game was played at a fast pace throughout, and in the second half there were many stoppages for minor injuries, while Howell (School) was forced to retire with cramp. Immediately before and after the game the Te Ante boys gave their popular liaka., much to the enjoyment of the large crowd. The teams were : Te Ante (red and black).- —Rota., Kea, Murray, Wilson, Kainamu, Pohatu, Kaanga, Wanoa, Raumona., MacClulchie, Raureti (captain), Huata. Kihi, Tibbie, Ranga. High School (white). —Beard. Robbie, Davidson, Edwards (captain). La.w, Howell, Rose, Sutton, Baigent. Carter, Whiblev. Barrett, Annear, Langley, Gilchrist.

School kicked off facing the sun and a long kick was returned to half-way, where the red forwards broke away, but good tackling by the School backs checked the movement. Te Ante pressed, but Annear dribbled back to halfway. Raureti and. Tibbie led the red pack into School’s territory, where Kea broke away, but he was nicely taken by Beard and hard ruckinc play continued in School’s twenty-five. The home forwards gradually worked their way out of the danger zone, and from midfield Rose worked the blind side and sent Edwards away for the winger to make a good run to Rola, who tackled him well. School again attacked and Robbie was thrown out near the corner flag. However, Huata led the reds back. From midfield the white vanguard broke away, but a forward pass spoiled a good movement. Then came a spectacular try. Tire ball was kicked high to Beard, and Kea, following up fast, literally snatched the ball out of the full-back’s hands to race 40 yards for a great try. Murray could not convert. —Te Ante 3, High School 0. The reds again attacked strongly and Murray was almost over, hut a penaltv enabled Beard to return play to midfield. Te Ante graduallv worked bn.ck into School’s twenty-five, where from a eet scrum Kaahga worked the blind side and sent Wilson over for a good try, which Murray could not convert. —Te Ante 6, High School 0. Half-time then soululed. EFFECTIVE TACKLING.

On the resumption, Te Aute kicked off into the sun and Raureti immediately led his vanguard into white territory, where the ball was heeled to the To Aute backs and Murray picked up sharply and crossed only to be recalled for'a knock-on. However, Raureti burst through and scored, the kick at goal being unsuccessful. —Te Aute 9, High School 0From the kick off the School backs came away in a good rush, but effective tackling ended the movement. However, the School forwards, led by Barrett, Annear and Langley, broke away and heeled cleanly, but Howell’s pass to Edwards went astray and a good movement was spoilt. Playing with great dash, the white forwards dominated the play and were twice unlucky not to score. However, the übiquitous Raureti led the reds back to half-way. Te Aute secured the ball and Murray made a fine opening and handed on to Huata, who crossed Irehind the posts. Murray converted, making the score. —Te Aute 14, High School 0. School, determined to open their account, attacked strongly and carried the leather to the red twenty-five, where Beard missed a penalty from a fairly wide angle. At this stage Howell was forced to retire with cramp. Robbie made a good dash down the line, but Rola tackled him .well, and the final whistle went with School attacking. The score was: Te Aute 14, High School 0. Mr A. Gordon refereed.

I(IA TOA CLUB

LECTURE ON RULES. About 30 members attended a general meeting of the Kia Toa Club on Tuesday evening. The chair was taken by Mr H. It. Crawford. A lecture on rules, with particular reference to recent amendments, was given by two referees, Messrs. L. G. Berry and H. Hands. Many questions were asked and an interesting discussion ensued. The two lecturers were accorded a vote of thanks. An amendment to the club’s rales was made, it being pointed out that the membership included a number of very young boys in the fifth and sixth grades, teams in those grades not being levied for a subscription, and it was decided that members of those grades should not be eligible to vote on club affairs.. Further arrangements were discussed in regard to the forthcoming dance of the club on the King’s Birthday.
