SCOUT NOTES

(B.v ‘‘Tenderfoot.’’) Wo :ill regret that S.M. Grindrod has had to enter hospital tor an operation. Just how long lie will he incapacitated is not known, hut all wijl desire lor him a speedy recovery. Perhaps in a lew days lie will he able to receive visitors. Scooters who can will look him up at the Public Hospital to cheer him on to a good recovery.

Meanwhile, the To Awe Awe t.-o-p will lie minus their leader, and A.S.M. Looser will have lull charge. The troop continues to progress. Ivan Oliver and his twin brother were two new reern'ts at the hist parade. All are sorry that their S.M. is laid up, hue are determined to keep things moving until he returns. Practice lor the Labour Day rally was begun, with work on the hoisting crane well started. Quite a unrulier of hoys hope to pass their second test soon. W. Archer secured his tenderfoot badge, and ninnv others are keen. Scoutmaster Grindrod will lie cheered to know that the hoys symnathi.se with him and that they, with the A.S.M., will keep the troop together until ho returns. The unexpected happens again. When all had begun to despair that Foxton would come to light again the following report arrives:— Te Awahoti Sea Scouts.—A number of changes have taken place, including the froop name. After a very serious discussion the committee decided to call a meeting of the hoys’ parents and those interested to decide the advisability of changing from scouts to sea scouts, and at that meeting there was a unanimous vote in favour of the change. Under the new heading the following appointments were made:—Scoutmaster Hamer, to he Group Scoutmaster; . Assistant Scoutmaster Macdonald, to lie Sea Scoutmaster. Also in the Sea Scouts: 1). Ebbett was appointed bosus (troop leader); C. Calder coxswain (patrol leader); 'l'. Everton and 15. Lucinsky. bowmen (seconds). The meeting night has been changed back to Thursday. At last the boys have their own hall, or will have when we have finished with it, because at the moment the high class decorating firm of “Te Awahoti Sea Hovers and Sea Scouts, Limited (very)’’ are renovating it, and what with paint, paste, paper, distemper and had temper (did you say “a scout smiles and whistles under all difficulties”) things are quite interesting. Last night only two hoys were under the paper so we’re improving and by the time wo have finished with the paste pot you will think we are a “stuck-up” crowd. The boys have not yet started furnishing their corners owing to jlie renovations, but in spite of all hardships we still manage to get in a little ambulance, signalling and other Scout work. Acting Rover-Leader Hamer reports that

the Rovers are doiii£p well and all are going through second-class work generally before settling down to work properly. The Cubs are also going strong under their Akela (Airs Rallies), who is doing good work in this direction. AVe note the remarks about had temper; it would appear that there was also quite a lot of bad paste about or was it pasters? However, good luck to the first Sea Rover Troop in the district. Alight we add that we like stories from the sea, Foxton, let us hear from von more often.

Sill Palmerston North (St. Paul’s) Troop.—AVe might as well be honest—we can’t report a quiet parade this week. I don’t know why these tilings happen, but they do. Only interrupt ordinary routine and we seem to think we have to interrupt our good behaviour. Then I think the S.At. had been feeling liverish all day, so perhaps that accounts for a good deal. However, read on and see what we did. To start oif, we had flag break and inspection. Immediately following we invested two boys and so tar alt is well except that we could not find our small Hag which we use for investiture and had to use our parade flag. This ceremony over, we proceeded witli handball for hali-an-hour. The game proved particularly strenuous and noisy and here 1 think the S.Al.’s nerves might have become jarred. Then wo formed tip on parade again while the b.AI. allotted duties in regard to a display tor the parents’ evening. AVith this work we carried on and finished tlie evening with a camp fire sing-song. AVe also hud a visit from a likely new recruit and wo are pleased to reinstate a Scout reported as being irregular ill attendance. His reasons are good and watertight, so we welcome him along when ne is able to come. This report might indicate that someone is worried, well, what about tins:

“If we would take the worries 1 tint ciuud Ine passing day, Anu mew iik.-in 11 seciuoiy, casting mo kcj away ; Then ta.vC our many messings And scan tnem oi.e try one, flow qu.cklv joy wuihd meet us, How soon nudiu \\ oriv ue done.” Quite good advice, “Biscuit.” AVe all nave a had time occasionally, hut when ue act as suggested in your lines, we are much the lalter lor it. Strange that one should think this week oi urging closer attention to handcraft worn and immediately alter wards comes a message from the Commissioner that a guinea prize has been donated to he given to toe troop (tor troop lunds) displaying the best collection ol handcraits at the Labour Hay rally, is not that a splendid idea? Who will win it? Lt is certain that this will make all troops keen and eager to win. What prompted it? There was considerable disappointment last year with the qililitv ot the work brought forward. There were many who realised that it was a poor showing for 19 troops of boys throughout the district. True, there was some really good work, but, altogether the display was far short of what can be done when time, concentration and real effort are employed. Now troops arid hoys, get really busy. Give us of your best; not altogether because a prize is offered, but also because the work is really worth while. Ihe Commissioner says that the winning display will also he shown during the Scout Week and may possibly he inspected bv the Governor-General. Begin the search for ideas ; determine to win tlie prize. The King has sent . a message to Lord Baden Rowell, the Chief Scout, who attended the Southern Rhodesian Boy Scout rally at Bulawayo. Ihe message reads:—l am very pleased to hear of the good progress that you Scouts have made iri numbers, smartness. and efficiency since 1 was last in South Africa. I hope you will keep strong your sense of brotherhood with the Scouts of other countries, as well as of Hie British Horn inions, and that von will do vour best each one of you ;to he loyal and helpful citizens of ! Rhodesia.

4tli Palmerston North Troop (All Saints’). —A good attendance was recorded at our parade on June 5, when Scoutmaster L. G. Callis was in charge, being assisted by AssistantScoutmaster P. W. Pass. After flag t>reak and prayers, an inspection was held, followed by a game of dodgeball. Mr Poynter then continued his talks on ambulance work, dealing with, a fractured leg and fractured thigh. The fireman's lift was also practised. Following a rehearsal for the troop concert a game of dodgeball was played before dismissal at 9 p.m.
