KIWITEA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. At the monthlly meeting of the Kiwitea County Council, on Wednesday, Cr. L. T. McLean presided. Accounts totalling £3043 4s lOd were passed for payment. The meeting decided to restore the salaries and wages of the county staff to the basis ruling at December 31, 1930, this decision to he effective as from May 9 last. COR R ESPONDENC E. From tho district engineer,--Public Works Department, with reference to the council’s protest against the Highways Board’s action in declaring the section of Otara Road in the Rangitikei county to be a main highway, while a larger section of the continuation of the road in the Kiwitea county was not declared: and advising that in selecting roads for declaration the Highways Board is guided largely by the recommendations of district highways councils, and, having regard to all the circumstances, the board came to the conclusion that there were other roads to he declared as main highways before the Ohingaiti-Pember-ton road could he favourably considered. —Received, the application to be renewed at a later date. From the Palmerston North Hospital Board, forwarding a copy of the estimates for the current year. The lew on this council for the current year is £3090 9s.—Received. From the secretary. National Federation of General Labourers and Belated Trades advising that the federation desires to effect a national agreement with all county councils relative to wages, hours, and working conditions. and suggesting a weekly rate of £4 10s of 40 hours weekly.—The council is to opjio.se the proposals, the matter to he left in the hands of the county clerk to reply. From the Rangitikei County Council. forwarding a copy ol a letter io tlie Public Works Department regarding the proposed acquisition ol land for protective works above the Onepuhi bridge, and requesting this council’s concurrence in the matter. Held over until the next meeting.

From the manager, Bank of New Zealand, Kimbolton, advising approval of the council's application for the continuance of the existing overdraft limit of £SOOO for the county fund account. —Received. From Mr H. Sweet requesting the council to open u |) the Lagoon Road leading to section 12, block XII, Hautapu S.D. —Referred to the county overseer lor attention. From the superintendent and secretary, Palmerston North Free Ambulance, advising that the request made monthly was not for a grant, but for the council’s assistance in reducing the ever-increasing demands of the Hospital Board by eliminating expenditure which is not absolutely necessary to the carrying on of their work. —Received.

REPORT ON WORKS. The report of tho overseer (Mr I. H. Eggeis), which was adopted, stated inter alia: —Cheltenham riding: The sections of the main highways and Lovett’s Line have been kept in ordei by the grader and the water-tables cut out. The roadmen have attended to maintenance work throughout the riding. Kiwitea riding: The section ql No. 52 main highway has been kept m fuiilv good condition by the grader. Perry’s, Alclieth's and Bryce’s Lines have' also been improved and the water channels cleaned out. ’The grader plant is at present improving Coulter s Road. The roadmen have attended to surface work and tho cleaning-out ol drains and water-tables as well as cutting back overhanging fern on Beaconsfield Valley Road and Mcßeth s Line. Waituna riding: Tho usual maintenance work has been carried out on the section, of tho No. 377 main highway. Several slips have been removed and two stone crates placed ill the stream near Rewa to prevent further erosion at the approach to the timber bridge. Improvements have been carried out oil Waituna \ alley Road and the corners on the Kiwitea-lapuae Road widened and metalled. The contractor will he making an early start delivering metal on this section of road, (jngo riding: The section of tho No, *377 main highway has been kept in fairly good condition during the past month. A quantity of repair metal has been carted out on to this road, which has also been dressed by the grader-. Repairs have been carried out to the groyne at the Parorangi ford. Maintenance work has received attention throughout the riding- and river shingle for concrete path improvements has also been delivered by the county truck. Kimbolton riding: The section of Nos. 52 and 53 main highways have been trimmed by the grader and pothole repair work attended to. A section of Me Beth’s Line and the Forest Road have been graded. Tho roadman has attended to maintenance work throughout the riding, as well as assisting with similar work in the Kiwitea riding. Drains have been opened up on the Upper Beaeonsfield Valley Road. Peep-o-Da.v riding: The section of the No. 52 main highway has been trimmed by the grader and surface work attended to. The roadmen have attended to maintenance work throughout the riding.
