WOODVILLE, May 15. The tennis season for tho Woodlands Road Tennis Club was closed yosterday afternoon, when the championship finals were played. Miss Anno Bonny proved tho winner of tho ladies’ match, and K. Strand tho men’s section. Miss Lynda Richards and J. Hurley being the runners-up. The president (Mr R. H. Morgan) presented the miniature cups to the winners, congratulated them on their success. Jim Clara Carroll, a former resident of Woodvillo, passed away at Napier this week in her 69th year. Sho is survived by a son and daughter, Jlr F. J. Carroll and Jliss K. Carroll, of Napier. Mrs Carroll was born in England in 1867 and came to New Zealand at the ago of 20. Sho took up her residence in Woodville, later going to Wellington. About 20 years ago she went to Napier sinco when sho had won the love and respect of a largo number of residents of many parts of the province. Her husband, to whom sho was married in North Auckland, died three years ago. The Woodville Borough Council mot on Thursday evening, the Mayor (Mr H. !’• Homo) presiding. The. Dannevirko Hospital Board advised that at a special meeting it had boon decided to make application to tho Local Government Loans Board for permission to raiso a loan of £25,000 for 20 years for the purpose of erecting additional buildings. Tho letter was received. Cr Galbraith remarked that there would not bo an increase in the hospital ra-te this year. Replying to tho council's communication, the employment division of the Dopaitment of Labour stated that as the state of tho stream at tho water supply headwords permitted only temporary repairs at tlic present, the authority for tho payment of a subsidy on the permanent work was being held in aboyanco in the meantime. _ Tho secretary of the Woodville Municipal Band (Mr S. Consideration of the matter was held over until the next meeting in the absence of the council’s representative on the hand committee. Repairs wore also needed to the roof of the bathroom and shed. Left in hands of works committee with power to act. A donation of £2 10s was made to tho Woodville subbranch of the Plunkct Society. The town clerk reported as follows on the finances:— Receipts: Rate arrears £l3 5s Bd, 10 per cent, penalty £1 4s 2d, eometcry £8 10s, water supply £4 14s, rents 2s, licenses £7 7s 6d, sundrios £3 Is, gasworks £9B 15s 7d, dr balance at May meeting, £1450 12s. Payments: Various payments, £709 Is 7d; dr balance at April meeting £B7B 10s 4d. The nightwatcliman (Mr L. McKinlay) applied for an increase in his weekly wage and a holiday, stating that he had held tho position for six years, during which period there had been little complaint from .subscribers. It was decided to suggest to Mr McKinlay that lie call a meeting; of subscribers with the object of making arrangements for a holiday. On the motion of the .Mayor and Cr Johnston, it was decided to request the Railway Department to remove the fence and gate in Station St root. It is proposed to smootlie the road surface ami metal portions with the object of making it a stock route to tho saleyards. Cr Galbraith pointed out that if the department required a holding yard for stock there was ample room on their own property. Cr Shearman drew attention to a blocked watcrtablo adjacent to Messrs Beale’s and Nicholas's residences. The Mayor stated that the council was endeavouring to get tho use of the county grader, as many of the streets were getting hollow and holding moisture. Miss I. Graham, who is training at tho Auckland Training College, is at present spending the vacation with hor parents, Mr and Mrs J. M. Graham, Woodville, Mr and Mrs N. E. Robertson left by car for Jlanaia on Thursday, where they are sepending a short holiday.
