PROPOSED VERDICT.
PROTEST BY COUNSEL. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, May 16. Declaring that his client would carry a stigma lor the remainder of his life if the verdict prepared by the Coroner were recorded, Mr C. J. L. White, who successfully defended Hugh. TJiquhart Neil Gunn on a charge ot murder last week, strongly protested against that verdict when the Coroner (Mr Dixon) sat this morning to complete the inquest on W’illiam Beatty. The Coroner intimated that Ins proposed verdict was that death was the result of a severe blow to the skull received during an altercation with Gunn Mr Whrte protested that, even though Gunn had been acquitted, such a verdict would stigmatise him for life. He objected to the limitation of the altercation to one person, when at the trial other possibilities were put forward. „ , . , The Coroner finally consented to use the words, “altercation with Gunn and others.”
