RACING NEWS

FROM TRACK AND STABLE,

TOOLEY STREET GOOD (By “Spectator.”)

H. Rama decided not to race his pair, Horowhenua and Horotin, at Mnrton, and with Tqoley Street tlicy will make their next appearance at the Waikato and Auckland meetings.

Otaki has been schooled over the fences at AVoocJvilJe and his displays have been very encouraging.

It is unlikely that Friesland will race again before the Wanganui winter meeting.

It is reported from Woodville that Rod Manfred, who has been turned out since his return from Australia, will shortly rejoin the active brigade, and his connections arc confident he will stand up to another preparation.

The Arausio gelding Flammarion has run himself out of the hack class, and his next appearance may he in open company at Auckland. He handles all classes of going well and hie future looks very bright.

Onowhetu, as a result of his success against the sprinters at Hawera, is one of the early favourites for the Cornwall Handicap, and kith some other members of J. Fryer’s team is booked to race at the Waikato fixture.

» Cynical Kid put in an appearance on the Hawera track this week for the first time this season. He looks big and lusty anti tuny be sent to Kllerslie, where lie has been nominated for the hunters’ events and also the principal steeplechases.

; Golden Rill went her best race for some [ time in running third to Boomerang and ; Flammarion at Hawera. The Captain Bunsby filly finished strongly, so her connections have decided to give her a trial over a middle distance at Wanganui next month. Indiscretion has been nominated for the ; hack steeplechase events at the Auckland 1 meeting. Since going to Hawera this Cynic marc has progressed satisfactorily, ■ having shaped well In both schooling and ' galloping efforts. March Alone went lame a couple of : days before the Egmont meeting and has . been turned out. This was unfortunate for his connections as lie schooled fairly well in company with Rasouli just prior to the meeting. The ..Ranger has joined T. R. George’s team at Trentham after qualifying with the Manawatu Hunt. He was given a run over four steeplechase fences at Trentham on Tuesday and guve a clean display of jumping, though he was blowing a bit afterwards. The Ranger last season showed excellent promise as a jumper, running second in the Dannevirke Hunt Cup Steeplechase and third in the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Cup Steeplechase. Diamond was none the worse for his fall while schooling at Trentham on Tuesday, and it lias been decided to send him to the Waikato meeting and then on to Auckland. If bo makes a satisfactory- showing in the Waikato Steeplechase his Great Northern engagements will probably be continued. Korero will be bis mate on the trip and his prospects of paying his way look bright, as he showed good form when lie finished a close third to Knight of Australia and Spiral in the Nolan Handicap at the Auckland Easter meeting. R. K. Smith will have the mount on Diamond, hut so far no rider has been for Korero. That smart southern lntck Tooloy Street was bred in the Auckland district, but lias done ail bis racing in the South Island. Hence be will attract a good deal of attention when H. Rama takes him to EUeislie. At the Oamaru meeting in March lie won over six furlongs each day. He war, then taken to Riverton where be won the Longwood Handicap, seven furlongs, on the first day, and after being beaten in the Southern Champion Hack Cup, one mile, on the second day he was successful over that distance oil the third day. He lias not had a race since. Toolcy Street is a tour-year-old gelding by Surveyor from Cantrip, by Signor, who won among other race’s the Canterbury Cup in 1938 when it was run over two miles and a quarter. Making his first appearance in a hurdle race, Silk Sox appeared to be decidedly unlucky to suffer defeat in the Munawapou Hurdles at Hawera. Jumping cleanly, though carefully, his pace on the flat soon enabled him to run up into a handy position, and be took charge at the five furlongs. Contact ran up to him at the last fence, but Silk Sox was doing better than his rival when he hit the hurdle rather hard and lost two or more lengths. Once Dulieu had him balanced again Silk Sox finished in good style, almost snatching victory on I lie post It was ccrtaintly a most encouraging display fot a horse makino- bis debut as a jumper. Ho lias the pace on the flat and his style of jumping should suit the solid hurdles at Ellcrshe. i
