Mr Raymond T. Ball, advance representative for the Long Tack Sam vaudeville company, arrived in Palmerston North yesterday to make arrangements for the company’s season here. . . The honour of life membership was conferred upon Mr T. B. Bowring, of Christchurch, by the New Zealand Technical School Teachers’ Association at its annual conference at Wellington yesterday.

Mr F, Slater, of Palmerston North, is leaving by the Monowai on Friday for Australia. He intends visiting his mother at Ballarat, and will b.e accompanied by his brother, Mr H. B. Slater, of Hawke’s Boy.' \ Messrs J. Murray (rector- of the Palmerston North Boys’.High. School.), G. G. Hancox (director of the Technical School), A. C. Zohi-ab and Dr. W. M. Smith are attending the Secondary Schools’ Conference in Wellington.. Mr W. Cooper, stationmaster at Tauranga, who has been appointed to fill the vacancy as assistant-station-master at Palmerston North occasioned by the transfer of Mr G. T. .Lawson to Auckland, will commence duty here on May 16. Mr M. A. Conway and 'Miss Ruth Conway left “Glenorchv,”' Cheltenham, for Wellington, to-day. They will sail by the Monowai for Australia, and will join the Ormond there for Colombo, where they will spend a three months’ holiday. Mr I. A. James, superintendent, of the State Collieries, after 25$ years’ service with the Mines Department, will, for health reasons, ■ vacate his position at the end .of this month,, prior to retiring on superannuation. In making this announcement yesterday the Minister of Mines (Hon. P. C. Webb) said that Mr James would be succeeded by Mr C. J. Strongman, inspector of coal mines for the West Coast inspection district.
