(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHHURST, May 12. On Monday evening a party of card players jou.ueyed to Kelvin Grove to play for the Whukarongo Euchre Shield, when some close and enjoyable games were played. Soon after the commencement of the evening Kelvin Grove were in the Jead, but fortmes changed when Ashhurst gradually crept level and then finally forged ahead to win, the scores being Ashhurst 73, Kelvin Grove 61. The local team were entertained at supper after which the captain (Mr B. 11. Buchanan) of Kelv *i Grove welcomed the visitors and congratulated them on winning the shield. Mr Baton, 'in reply, thanked the home team for ’ the splendid social evening. Aokautore are the next challengers, and will meet Ashhurst within a fortnight. The friends of Mrs McLaughlin will regret to hear of the accident she met with during last week, and wish her a speedy recovery. . . _ , TT , The monthly meeting of the Women s Institute was held cm Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs Flowers occupied the chair. There was a verv fair attendance of members and visitors. Mrs Amon gave a report on the annual council meeting reemtly held in Palmerston North. Mrs Ker-rin-arv rendered two appreciated solos, “Serenade” md “Songs My Mother Taught Me.” A playette by members of the drama club—“ Advertising for a Alaid3 brought forth a great deal of applause. Those taking part were: Mrs Gaisford, Miss Youlo, Mrs Coles, and Mrs Cook. These members were accorded a vote of thanks in helping to pass such a pleasant afternoon. The competitim for the sen'ors resulted:—Mrs Tremewan 1, Miss Tremewan 2, Mrs Murphy 3. Til is was for mustard pickle. The junior competition was for scones, and resulted: —Miss Youle 1, Miss Dobson 2, Miss M. Wilkin 3. Mrs Fostm and Mrs Muldrock wore the judges, and a vote of thanks was passed to those ladies. The motto for the month was as follows: —“Those who bring sunshine into lives of others, cannot keep it from themselves.” The hostesses for the month of Jane will bo Mesdames Smith Temnletnn. Tremewtn, Tunn : cliffc, and Miss Muldrock. Afternoon tea was handed round by the hostesses, md the singing of the Natiis.al Anthem, brought a happy gathering to a close.
