TRADE WITH JAPAN.
AUSTRALIAN AGREEMENT. WAY MADE OPEN. Received April 23, 10.5 a.m. CANBERRA, April 28. The Federal Ministry hopes to be able to place a trading agreement between the Commonwealth and Japan before Parliament for ratification before the end of the present session. Japan, it is understood, has provided a solution to the apparent deadlock in the negotiations by reducing the output of rayo.n, and. the Commonwealth may now be in a position to avoid the reported restrictive .action against this Japanese commodity bv accepting a. treaty .which will not conflict with Japanese or British manufacturing interests. The Canberra correspondent of the Sydney Sun on February 23 said: Grave doubts are now held by the Government that the trade treaty negotiations with Japan will reach a satisfactory conclusion. Cabinet is now discussing the position, but the Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons), beyond saying that the negotiations had reached a very delicate stage, declined to comment. Senator Sir George Pearce, Leader of the Government in the Senate, informed the House that the Govment would make an early announcement of policy regarding Japanese trade, including rayon importations, and the whole question would be debated in Parliament. Japan subsequently announced a reduction of the output of rayon.
