PAHIATUA

PAIIIATUA, April 24. The funeral of the late Mr G. Harold Smith was hold at the Karori Cemetery, Wellington, on Thursday. There were gathered at the graveside a large number ot his friends and representatives of various bodies and organisations with which j-he had been associated. A service was I c. nducted at the Kent Terraco mortuary eliapel by Canon Percival James, who i gave a short appreciation of the many estimable qualit.es of .the departed gentleman. The pall-bearers were .Messrs if. White t J. Y. Grawlord, J. A. fcinekieton, J. G. Swainson, P. 11. Boagey, and Hr H. Patorson. The' New Zealand Law Society was represented by Mr 11. J. Thompson, the Wairarapa District Law Society by Mr J. W. Card, Fcalherston, and the Wellington District Law Society was also represented. Messrs F. 11. Bolton (Pahiatua County Council), S. K. Siddells (Pahiatua Borough Counc 1), Dr H. Patorson (War Belief Association), Messrs P. B. Boagey (Belu npd Soldieis’ Association), J. Y. Crawford, F. White and J. A. Shekleton (Pahiatua Club), B. T. Adams (Pahiatua legal fraternity), D. 0. L. llowden (Bank of New Zealand, Pahiatua), and representatives of the various business premises in the town were also present. Major T. M. Wilkes, Director of Air Services, and Colonel 0. H. Meade were present as old friends. Tho annual meeting of parishioners of St. Peter’s Church was held this week. There was an attend nee of about 50 and Rev. 11. Wilson presided. Tho reports of the vicar and the churchwardens were read and adopted. The treasurer, Mr \V. A. Wiison, read the balance-sheet, showing a loss on the year’s operations of £4O. The balance-sheet was adopted. Tire trustee of the new church building fund, Mr G. G, Taylor, reported that the fund now stoed at £970 3s 6d. The balance-sheet of the Ladies’ Guild was read by tho treasurer, Mrs W. Houston, and showed a credit balance of £4l 14s after pay’ng £59 6s 9d to the vestry for chuicli purposes. Tho report ;Tid balance-sheet of St. Peter’s Sunday School was read by the superintendent, Mr G. Haines, and disclosed a credit balance ot £ls 11s 4d. A report of the activities of the Senior Girls’ Club for the year was presented, together with tho balance-sheet, winch showed a credit in hand of £52 15s Bd. The vicar nominated Mr V. J. Scott as his warden, Mr A. W. Hamilton was re-elected the parishioners’ warden, and tho following were elected to the vestry: Messrs G. L. Chatwin, G. T. Cornelius) G. Haines, H. Hirst, J. M. Buie, L. A. Truseott, W. L. Tattle, W. M. Vo well, A. \V. fYhito, and IV. A. Wilson. Mr R. C. Austin was appointed auditor. A motion of sympathy with tho widow and relatives of the late Mr G. Harold Smith was passed, all present standing in silence for a few moments. The late Mr Smith had been on the roll of members for 43 years. As a result of the resignation of G'r W. 11. Murch irom the Pahiatua Borough Council an election to till the vacancy will be held shortly. In the course of a discussion on the town’s water supply at the annual meeting of the Fire Board, Mr W. A. Parton, insurance representative on the board, said it uoeded a good fire to awaken tho Borough Council to a sense of its duty in the matter. Mr A. W. White was reelected chairman for the ensuing year, Mr Parton paying a compliment to tho eapablo manner in which Mr White had hold oflico during the previous twelve months. The annual contests conducted by the Pahiatua Dog Trial Club were entered upon til’s week. Tho trials a.re held on Mr F. W. Bibby’s property at Mangahao. Mr C. Hay, of Masterton, acted as judge, nnd Mr W. Bnssen was the timekeeper. Mr S. K. Wylie have returned to Kaitawa after having spent the past fortnight with Mr Wylie's parents at Gore.
