RIVER BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North River Board was held yesterday. The Mayor (Mr A. E. Hansford) presided. Also present were Messrs Jos. Batclielar” G. Tremaine, J. Hodgens, J. T. J. Heatley and M. Anderson, and the advisory engineer (Mr E. Fisher). Reporting on the works of the hoard, the foreman (Mr A. Lane) stated:“The repairing of two breaches in the willow banks at Mr Gosling’s property, affected by the recent floods, with heavy tree-work and stone ballast is completed; one breach adjoins No. 4 groyne on the eastern bank and the second is below No. 1 groyne oil the west bank. The total cost is £6o 8s Bd. Approximately one chain of tins work has been carried out above No. 1 groyne at Anderson’s bend. lhe cost was'£lo. Hopcroft’s creek: lhe hauling of several trees from the creek bed and the repairing of a breach in the bank caused By the lodgment of these trees above the outlet to the river is completed, the cost being £ls 12s. Mcßae’s bend: The cutting and hauling of the heavy trees for the brush groynes is in progress; the treework for the main two groynes is completed and commencement of the third groyne is in hand. The majority of the trees are being hauled from Mr McRae’s property. No. 5 scheme: The No. 5 scheme men have been engaged on the usual routine “work, scything between the trees below the camp site and cleaning around same, cutting goatsrue, repairing willow fences ami restacking trees on the various plantations. General: Owing to the low level of the river during the last month, the pile-driving plant, required to construct the groyne authorised at Mcßae’s bend at the last meeting of the board, was for a time unable to proceed upstream owing to an insufficient depth of water. The recent rain has provided sufficient depth and the plant has now proceeded upstream to its destination. The driving of the idles will be commenced in the course of a day or so. The weather and river conditions have been excellent for the progress of the brush groynes and the repairing of the breaches in the willow banks. No freshes have been recorded for tlie month.” ~ It was resolved to write to All alcltae thanking him for his donation of the trees for the construction of brush groynes at the bend on his property.
