OBITUARY.
ALEXANDRA CARLISLE. NEW YORK, April 22. The death has occurred of Alexandra Carlisle, one of the best-known and most widely-admired Shakespearean actresses in England and the United States in the past two decades.
Alexandra Carlisle was born in London in 1886, and made her first appearance on the stage at Lowther Lodge, Kensington, on July 13, 1903, as Audrey in “As You Like It,” and Maria in scenes from “Twelfth Night.” Three years later she was appearing at the Shaftesbury Theatre as leading lady playing Margaret Ruthven in “A Gilded Fool,” and in the same year she made a great success as Carlotta in “The Morals of Marcus.” After playing Portia in Sir H. Beerbohm Tree’s revival of “The Merchant of Venice,” and Olivia in “Twelfth Night,” she visited New York in 1908. From 1913 to 1920 she resided in the United States, playing Shakespearean and other parts, besides producing Masefield’s “Nan,” in which she played the name part. She made a reappearance in England in 1921, but returned to America the same year. During the period prior to the Presidential election in 1920, as delegate from Massachusetts, she addressed the Republican Convention at Chicago, and seconded the nomination of the party candidate.
