PREPARING FOR EGMONT.
WINTER SEASON APPROACHES. (By “Spectator.”) Royal Limond, a doublo winner at Riverton, is entered for steeplechase events at the Egmont meeting. Thoro aro a few Awapuni entries fot Egmont, including Esteem, Petrarch, and Forest Clio*-. Onewhetu has been nominated for the principal handicap . each day §t Egmont, also tho sprint on the second day. Reports from Taranaki credit Bavistock with being in rare fettle and he is expected to make liis presence felt in tho Mcßae Handicap at Hawera. Hunting Go, since his fall at Riccarton in tlie spring, has evinced a disliko to racing in a field, and it has been decided tq try him over obstacles. J. Eryor lias PanlofT and M alx 'h Alone going aiong nicely at Hawera in preparation for the winter jumping season. R. Barlow has sold flic Mercian King gelding Bomboy to Mr. Lewis Ayre, of Hamilton. It is understood that Bombey has heen bought for jumping events Boomerang, w’ho showed promising form at Feilding, is among the entrants for hack sprints at tho Egmont meeting. Inyictus, who failed to show any dash over hurdles at Feilding, is among tho entrants for the steeplechase events at Hawera. Boughal, who has fair sprint form in and around Auckland to his credit, is nominated for the Flying and Flokoia Handicaps at Hawera. Luck has boon against him of late and the Acre gelding has had a series of outs. Polydora looks an improved mare since her race at Easter, and as her hurdle form has been good she should he one of Ricearton’s most prominent performors over the battens this winter. Pladie, whoso form has been good, has been awarded 9.0 in tho Bannevirke Handicap. He and Big Book have staged some great fights recently, hilt at Hastings last Saturday Pladie failed to run on and Big Book beat all but Plunting Cat.
Transact, winner of the Egmont Steeplechase last .year with 9.3, is again an en trant. He also won the Adamson Steeplechase on tho second day with a rise of 101 b, and subsequently at Wanganui was second to Riotous (11.13) in the Wan ganui Steeplechase with 10.11 bn his back. Galleon was ono of the unlucky hofses at Riverton. On the first two. days he covered a lot of ground on tlie outside of tho course and on the final day could not got through the several horses spread across the track at the finish. High Tea showed a pleasing return to form at Avondale. It was only in Boccmber that ho was operated on for wind trouble by Br W. C. Ring, and ho has made a wonderful recovery. He should not be long in winning again, Callamart is being schooled over country at Hawera. He won the Grand National Hurdles in 1931 and the Great Northern and Winter Steeplechases at Ellorslie in 1933. Last season he had five outings, but failed. At his best ho is a class fenoer, but ago must be telling its story now, Vaipcen, winner of the last two Grand Nationals at Riccarton, is an entrant for the Egmont Steeplechase. It will be interesting to see what the handieapper gives the son of Valkyrian. Ho carried 11.13 to victory over the three miles and a half journey of the difficult Riccarton country last August, One of the easiest wins at the Avondale meeting was that of Scrgia, who scored her first success in the Dominion Handicap, after registering a number of minor piacings. She should win more races in hack events now that she lias mado a start.
Grateful, Onewhetu, and Alchemic aro recent winners engaged in the Flcßae Handicap at Hawera. Bavistock was second to Ilazoor at Taitjicronikau and Prostration was second to both Concertpitch in the Great Easter and Fracas in tile Templeton Handicap at' Riccarton: It looks like being a great race. When Rorcatu won the Mt. Eden Handicap at Ellcrslie it , was tho fourth time this year that lie bad won on the second day after being beaten on the first, having done likewise at. the Takapuna, To Aroha, and Ellcrslie meetings. PUnchcstown, the runner-up to Valpeon in tlie last Grand National Steeplechase, has rejoined T, H. Gillett’s stable at Riccarton and will be got ready for a wintor campaign.
Scotch Nation, a winner over hurdles at Ellorslie recently, lias started only twice over the battens and on oach occasion has. won without Iroublo. lie is already being spoken of in tlie north as the likely winner of the Great Northern Hurdles, to bo run in June.
Gold Cure may make bis reappearance over hurdles at. Dannevirke. After running a close second to Court Avmti in tho jiighwcight at Bulls, the black gelding was fancied for tho Kaiero Hurdles at Awapuni, but fourth was tho best ho could do. Ho will probably bo all the better for that outing and if he starts al Wondville may he worth watching. Dollar Bill went a sound race in the concluding event at Riccarton . and a hundred yards from home he Was In front with Prostration and Fracas .coming at him. He weakened over the last bit and had to be content with third money, a neck and a bead separating flip three of them. The Paper Money gelding has a good record and since Christmas lias had two wins and four seconds in njnc starts. Ho looks a likely sort to pick up an early stake.
At the Grand National meeting in 1934 Brigadore and Emotion staged a couple of desperate finishes over tlie battens. In (he Trial Hurdles Emotion prevailed by a head. .On tho second day the pair . inct again in the Spreydou Hurdles, and this time Brigadore won by the same margin. The Polazol gelding had five further races that season and lie recorded a first, second, and third. He is entered at Dannevirke and Egmont. and if lie is sound his presence will add interest to jumping events this winter.
Daring Deed, who races in tlie South Island, in usually sent out; to Iho front in her racc.s and left without a finish, Slip was so handled in tile Rivel-loii Cup aild faded away at. the finish. She took matters into her own hands on tlie second day. She did not begin well, but gradually worked up to tho leaders and won in a hard-fought finish. There aro other horses which should be ridden a waiting race instead of being sent out to the front. They arc to be seen at ovnry mooting.
