FOXTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTOX, April 21.

Mr and Mrs R. Riddle, who have been spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs W. E. Riddle, returned to Auckland yesterday. At Monday night’s meeting of the Foxton Borough Council Cr D. R. Barron complained about drinking that was going on at local dances. “Outside a hall on a recent morning after a small dance,” he said, “two boys gathered up 29 empty beer and wine bottles and one lull one.” It was decided to take steps to remedy the position as far as local dance halls are concerned.

The town clerk (Mr Wm. Trueman) submitted a comprehensive review of the position. of the borough to the council in a lengthy annual report. Inter alia the report stated that.at March 31, 1935, the borourgh owed a sum of £2459 17s 2d by way of overdraft, plus sundry creditors unpaid of £2369 17s ?d, a total of £4829 14s 9d; against rates, etc., outstanding of £3244 7s 3d and sundry debtors of £1867 15s lOd, a total of £5112 3s Id, leaving a net credit of £282 8s 4d. As a considerable portion of the outstanding revenue was more or less irrecoverable the credit margin was very slender. At March 31, 1936, the position was as follows: The sum of £65 16s 8d was owing bv way of overdraft, to which must be added a sum of less than £IOO owing to sundry creditors, and against this rates, etc., outstanding amount to £2538 Os Id, plus other sundry debtors £1251 11s, leaving a credit of approximately £3624 11s Id. Tho capitalisation of arrears of interest owing to tile Stalo Advances Office amounting to £2395 5s Id lias materially assisted in this recovery, but even allowing for this the, credit " position has improved by at least a thousand pounds on last year’s figures. Commenting on various items in his report to the. Borough Council, tho clerk paid a tribute to the attention given to patients in the Palmerston North Hospital and referred to the benefit to bo derived by Foxton residents from the stationing, locally of a district nurse. Mr Trueman indicated that the council would be calling on the Manawatu County Council for assistance in connection with the Foxton cemetery at the near future, or else failing that stipulating that the cemetery should be used by Foxton residents alone. The clerk was gongratulatcd on his statement. Estimates were approved, the rale being the same as last year. .
