THE WAGES QUESTION. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 22. As both parties preferred to await, the full announcement of the Govern, ment’s industrial legislation, an applii cation for a new Dominion motor mechanics’ award award in the Con, ciliation Council to-day was adjournecj until May 19. In place 'of ah hourly wages rate the workers sought a weekly rate and a reduction from 44 _to 40 hours in the working week. The union askeq wages ranging from £5 os to £4 10§ weekly, the employers’ counter-pro, posals being based on the present award under which a man for 40 hours would earn £3 16s Bd. The union objected to the employers’ proposal for special rates for assistants except for petrol .station attendants, claiming that they should he regarded as apprentices.
