THE MAREO CASE.
FRESH TRIAL SOUGHT. Per Press Association. WELLINGiOIN, April 21. Application xor a fresh trial in the Marco case has been made to the Uovernor-Generai-in-Couucii oil the grounds of tile discovery of new evidence not previously available. Although 110 official statement could be obtained, it is believed a favourable recommendation for a--re-triul is almost certain. AA’hen the matter was referred to the Attorney-General (Hon. H. G. R. Mason) to-night, he- stated that where, on an application for the mercy of the Crown on behalf of any person convicted of a crime, the Goveriior-Geiieral-iii-Council entertained a doubt as to whether such person ought to have been convicted, he might direct a new trial at such time and before such Court as he thought proper. In the present case Mr H. F. O’Leary, counsel for Eric Mareo, had made application to the Attorney-General and submitted new evidence which was not available at the previous trial. The Governor-Gen-eral was out of town at present, but the application would be placed before a meeting of the Executive Council as soon as it conveniently could be arranged after his return to AVellington.
A milk bar. claimed to be the first to be installed in a cinema, was opened recently at the Carlt.on Theatre, Haymarket, London, by Mr Thomas Baxter, chairman of the Milk Marketing Board.
