SECONDARY SCHOOL
MEETING OF BOARD. The monthly meeting of the High Schools’ Board of Governors and Technical School Committee was held last evening, Mr J. A. Nash presiding. Also present were Mrs M. Aitcliison and Messrs M. H. Oram, T. R. Hodder, G. Tremaine, O. Monrad and J. Murray (rector of the Boys’ High School). There were apologies for the absence of Messrs J. W. Rutherfurd and AV. R. Birnie. The director of the Technical School (Mr G. G. Hancox) reported that on March 1 the full-time equivalent roll was 50“ and the equivalent staffing for day and evening classes was 27.2 fulltime teachers. The gross takings for the gala day had been £74 13s lOd and the profit of £62 Is 9d had been lodged in the Post Office Savings Bank. Mr Walker had visited the Auckland and Hamilton Technical Schools to observe developments in motor and electrical engineering. The new engineering shop was nearing completion; the erection of the kitchenette to the hall had been commenced, and the painting of the sports pavilion -was nearly completed. Mr Nash commented that the efforts of the school had met with wonderful success on gala day, and on his motion it was decided to convey to Air Hancox and his staff congratulations on their achievement. Permission was granted to purchase a wireless set and electric polisher for the school. The rector reported that the roll number at the Boys’ High School was 416 and the average attendance 398. The boys of the agricultural class had visited Air H. J. Lancaster’s farm at Glen Oroua at the invitation of the Jersey Breeders’ Club., A hook drive among the boys had added 350 volumes to the fiction section of the library. The Anzac Day service would be held oh Friday at 11 a..m. The lady principal (Mrs AL Rhodes) reported that the roll at the Girls High School was 288 and the average attendance 271.416. Miss A. D. Rogers, M.Sc., who had been appointed to a relieving position during the absence of Miss McLeod, on leave, took up her duties on April 6. Aliss Griffiths had received notice that she had completed the degree of B.H.Sc. Aliss D. E. Horton, AI.A., who had been appointed to the B grade vacancy caused by the resignation of Aliss Poglar. had notified her acceptance of the position. Inter-school matches: “The ‘A’ grade tennis team from the Dannevirkg High School visited Palmerston North last Saturday to play the annual match. Our team were victorious, by 92 games to 23 (12 sets to nil). The Dannevirke team was without its two best players, and this placed the whole team at a disadvantage,” Airs Rhodes added.
The Director of Education, in reply to the board’s recent communication seeking assistance to enable country pupils to board at the hostels, thus saving time in train journeys, requested particulars of the present train arrangements.,—lt was decided to forward the necessary details.
Air Monrad was appointed to represent the committee on the Aluseum and Art Gallery Association Committee. It was decided, on the chairman’s motion, to endeavour to arrange for a visit by the Minister of Education (He r. P. Fraser) to open the new classrooms at the Girls’ High School. Permission was granted Mr Murray to procure a special type of soil for the cricket pitches. He reported that the use of similar soil had proved very satisfactory.
