Mr H. Smith, of Te Matai Road, who was seriously injured when lie was thrown from a dray he was driving on April 15, is progressing favourably. A Press Association message trom Wellington states that at the Drapers’ Conference Mr A. P. Smith (Wellington) was elected president; Mr C. Ogilvie (Christchurch) vice-president; and Mr W. Simm (Wellington) nominee on the Advisory Board. The death occurred on Saturday afternoon, after a long illness, of Mr John S. Swan, for years one of Wellington’s most prominent architects. For nearly o 0 years Mr Swan had been associated with architecture in Wellington, and he designed many of the most prominent buildings in the city and in other parts of the Dominion. Mr A. L. M. Perry, of the staff of the Christchurch Boys’ High School, who is at present on leave of absence in England, has been warded a travelling scholarship by the Carnegie Corporation of New York on the recommendation of Professor I'. Clarke, of the University of London, and Dr. C. E. Beeby, of the New Zealand Council for Educational Research in England. Mr Perry has been engaged in investigating problems in post-primary education with special reference to the needs of New Zealand. Tlie death has occurred at Auckland of Major James Rufus Boose, C.M.G., who had lived there during the past year. Major Boose, late of Queen Victories Rifles, was late Travelling Commissioner of the Royal Empire Society, and had travelled extensively through the British Dominions. He was the author of many publications on Imperial affairs.
