HOSPITAL BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. REPORTS ON INSTITUTION. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board was held yesterday afternoon, Mr J. Tv. Hornlilow presiding. Others present were Mrs M. Aitchison, Messrs J. Hodgens, M.P., A. E. Mansford, L. T. McLean, J. A. Nash, D. Coll is, T. Green, G. A. Monk, J. Boyce, TV. Howell, M. A. Moody, G. P. Catley and F. J. Ryder. Leave of absence was granted Mr V. FT. Smith. The chairman welcomed back the managing-seerptary (Mr A. J. Phillipps) after his illness, and expressed appreciation of the assistance meanwhile given him by the medical superintendent (Mr J. H. North), and accountant (Mr TV. H. Galbraith). “Tlie plastering and repair work to the main corridor, which was recently re-roofed, has now been completed and the repainting is well advanced. This should bo finished in about a week’s time,” reported Mr Galbraith, as acting managing-secretary. “The new roof of the fever ward building, which is used as the southern ward, has now been painted and a start has been made on the new fence in Ruahine Street. The drying ground at the Hospital has been topdressed with asphalt and repairs have been carried out to some of tho pathways around the maternity home.” The medical superintendent (Mr J. H. North) reported that 299 patients were admitted to the Hospital during March, and 284 discharged. Fourteen had died and 207 remained in the institution at the eiftl of the month, the daily average number of occupied beds being 218.06. Four cases of scarlet fever and two of diphtheria had been admitted. There were 24 admissions to the maternity home, and 93 attendances at the ante-natal clinic. The matron, Miss J. McGhie, reported that during the month several nurses had been off duty with minor complaints. They were now better, and the general health of the staff remained good. Donations had been received as follow:—Flowers, Palmerston North Horticultural {society's Dahlia Show ; books and magazines, Palmerston North Hospital TVomen’s Auxiliary, Rangiwahia Public Library. Miss O. Stephens, Mrs L. Laing and Anonymous. The social welfare officer (Mr TV. H. J. TVatson) reported that during-March 751 rations had been issued to 9l cases in tiie district, including 417 rations to 50 cases in Palmerston North. During the corresponding month of last year 617 rations were issued to 87 eases in the whole district, including 373 rations to 51 cases in Palmerston North. Dr. TJlric Williams, of Wanganui, forwarded a lengthy circular on hospital treatment and invited the board to join a Dominion-wide campaign for “the investigation and exploitation of a new simple, inexpensive and effective principle.” It was decided to secure copies for the information of all members of the board.
