POPULATION GAINS

CENSUS RETURNS. WELLINGTON, April 20. Mast remarkable in the latest batch of census returns to be'issued by the Government Statistician is the in'crease of over 2000 in the population of the Mount Itoekill Road District, a portion of the suburban area of Auckland, during the last 10 years. New Lynn Borough, another suburb of Auckland, also has increased considerably in population, and Mount Eden Borough, Auckland, is more populous, but in much smaller proportion. Taumarunui County has 778 more inhabitants than in 1926 and Kairanga County 828 more. The census shows a decrease of over 1000 in the number of people in Rangitikei County, but actually the population has been practically stationary, Because the 1926 returns included about 1000 visitors to a Maori gathering. A heavy decrease, considering the size of the centre, is shown by the Thames figures, which are nearly 500 lower than in 1926. Wallace County shows an increase of nearly 1000, attributable partly to the establishment of Public Works Department camps for the men working on the Milford Road. Gains of between 400 and 500 are indicated in the figures for Collingrvood County and Oninemuri County. Bluff Borough apparently has shared Invercargill s expansion, and has now over 400 more people than 10 years ago. On census night this year there were 24 people within Fiord County, compared with 22 on censuß night, 1926. Fiord County consists mostly of the vast tract of mountain, lake, forest and fiord in the south-western part of the South Island. A total of 203 returns' are now to hand, 121 from the North Island 81 from the South Island, .and one from the Chatham Islands. The approximate ‘ position is as follows: Total Total Net gains, losses, gain.
