PAHIATUA.

PAHIATUA, April 18. The following motion, of which notice, has been gfken by Cr. Watts, is to be considered at a special meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council: “That the resolution moved by the Mayor and. seconded by Cr. Brown, ‘That the work of constructing the underground water chamber be not proceeded with at present but that fresh tenders be called in the next spring,’ be rescinded, and that the following be put in lieu thereof: ‘That an opinion by way of vote be obtained from the ratepayers (at the forthcoming poll in connection with the cemetery proposal) on the following: (1) Whether the council should use only the present well, or (2) whether the council proceed, with the construction of an underground water chamber on the portion of land purchased from the Balfour estate, or (3) whether the council should obtain fresh expert advice on the whole question’.” The season for the Ngaturi Tennis Club was brought to a close with a dance in the Kohinui Hall last evening. There was a good attendance, which included a number of residents of Pahiatua. Mr W. Eckert was M.C., and music was provided by a quartette of Palmerston North musicians. Mrs E. Olson, Miss E. Amundsen and Mr A. Ganderton supplied extras during the interval at supper time, and the ladies of the club provided supper. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Amundsen and Mr R. Gardner. Mr J. Amundsen (secretary) and his associate committeemen left no stone unturned to ensure the success of the gathering. Mr W. S. Lett is now well on the road to recovery from the illness which has kept him a patient in a private hospital. Mrs Lett, who has also been ill, is now recovering. Mrs W. E. Rose has returned to lier home in Hall’s Road after being a patient in a. private hospital. Mr and Mrs C. B. Tylee and family, accompanied bv Miss J. Rutherford, have returned home to Makuri after spending a holiday at West Shore, Napier. Mrs C. Gosling has returned home after spending a holiday .at Gisborne. Mr and Mrs J. H. Powell, of Auckland were visitors to Makuri for Easter. Mr and Mrs M. S. Alpass are visitors to Wellington. Mr Taylor and Miss Russell, Wellington, were the.guests of Mr and Mrs G. Taylor for the holidays. Mr and Mrs H. Dransfield, Napier, are the guests of the former’s parents for the holidays. The many friends of Mrs H. Whitta will regret to learn that she has been obliged to enter a private hospital for treatment. There were only nine players, six senibr and three third grade, present at the meeting of the Athletic Football Club held on Friday evening. It was decided, on the motion of.Mr J. Bohm, seconded by Mr B. King, that no senior team be entered for the competition owing to tho lack of support.- Messrs W. Comber, C. Harvey, A. Mills and J. McSlierry applied for transfers to Mangatainoka, these being granted. It was thought that in view of the good team fielded by the thirds last season it should be possible to obtain a ful team again. The matter was left in the hands of the secretary to advise the team captain that if a full list is not available by next Monday evening no team will be entered in the third grade competition. On Saturday the Pahiatua District High School Tennis Club held their teams’ championship matches. The results are as follow : —Boys’ championship singles; Fred Groves beat Robin Matthew, 10 —8, in a hardfought game. Both played well, but the winner was more accurate than his hard-hitting opponent. Girls’ championship singles: Grace Bisset beat Joan Baucke, 9 —6. Boys’ doubles (handicap): Winners: Fred Groves and Jack Beales; runners-up, Robin Matthews and Bruce Howell. Girls’ doubles (handicap): Winners: Beryl Buckingham and Grace Bisset; runners-up, Ngaire Burr and Jean Watts. Mixed doubles , (handicap): Winners: Raymond Brown and Joan Sowry; runners-up, Robin Matthews and Grace Bisset. Boys’ singles (handicap): Winner: Fred Groves; run-ner-up, Robin Matthews, girls’ singles’ (handicap): Winner, Ngaire Burr; runer-up, Dawn Cook.
