DAVIS CUP TENNIS
AUSTRALIANS OPTIMISTIC. VANCOUVER, April 18. Bronzed and in excellent condition, members of the Australian Davis Cup tennis team landed to-day. They expressed the belief that they had a 50-50 chance of beating the United States. Crawford has cut 14 pounds off his weight. Ideal weather induced immediate arrangements for practice. The team are in demand at Seattle, Winnipeg and Toronto. The itinerary is being arranged to allow them to play at Vancouver on Wednesday. FORMIDABLE RIVALS. AUSTIN’S OPINION. LONDON, April 18. “Despite the fact that the Americans are training like an army for an arduous campaign, and the Germans are being coached by Tilden, I believe the Australians are our most formidable .rivals in the Davis Cup,” writes H. AV. Austin in the Evening News. “Although it is at present uncertain what advance Budge has made, Perry’s back has recovered, and’ he is now regaining his lost weight and fitness. If he returns to his finest form Britain may be confident of retaining the Davis Cup and Perry’s championships.”
