PROMOTION OF WORK

MINISTER’S CRITICISM

VIEWS OF MAYOR. Though he did not know whether the statement made by Hon. R. Semple, during the debate on the. Employment Promotion Bill—when the Minister suggested that city councils were largely to blame for the conditions under which young men had laboured in the past—applied to Palmerston North, the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mausford) commented to-day that the Palmerston North City Council had done everything in its power to relieve the situation. Speaking generally,, he thought that it had spent more money, in proportion to its revenue, than any other council for this purpose. It had had nothing whatever to do with the cutting back of the rates formerly ruling at the Milson aerodrome, which work was under the direct control of the Public Works Department.
