JAPANESE SCHEME.
CANAL THROUGH SIAM. Japan still visualises a canal through the isthmus of Kra, Southern Siam, in order to counter-balance the strategic advantage of the Singapore naval and air bases. The Japanese are intensifying their efforts to foster a friendly relationship with the Siamese Government, as the proposed canal would enable the Japanese Fleet to pass from the China Sea to the Indian Ocean without traversing the Straits of Singapore into the Straits of Malacca, which is the only route at present. It is understood that the British, French and Dutch authorities have discussed the problem of the security of their possessions in the Far East. M. Pages, Governor of Cochin China, states that neither England nor France is perturbed by reports that Siam will consent to the canal, but its construction would lead toia grave crisis. He sure, however, that the scheme will not materialise.
