To remove candle-grease, lift off as much as possible with a knife, then place a sheet of blotting-paper on both sides of the fabric and put a warm iron on top. Repeat several times, if necessary, using a fresh part of ’the blotting-paper every time. If a ceiling becomes flaky and portions of whitewash tend to fall away, make a solution of alum (£oz) a.iid water (1 pint). Paint this on the ceiling with a soft brush. Hands which have roughened through sewing may be smoothed if they are lathered with a mixture of soap and granulated sugar. If a coat has shiny elbows, ta.ke a piece of sandpaper while v the wearer has the coat on and gently rub the shining portion. This just roughens the surface enough to do away with the shine, and should hot injure the material.
