RACING AT FEUDING.

I ONEWHETU'S EASY WIN; ; I DIATOMOUS BACK TO FORM. ! A happy holiday atmosphere per- ; vaded the opening day of the Feilding Jockey Club's Easter meeting- on Saturday, and this was reflected in an increase of £5135 10s in the totalisator turnover on last year, the figures be-: ing £20,207 10s and £15,072 respectively. The weather was beautifully fine and the track fast. Onewhetu, distinguished himself by breaking .the time record for the Feilding Cup'in 2.4 2-5, the previous best j being that of King Colossus in 1031 when he took 2.5 4-5. Diatomous won I the sprint convincingly, and coming on top of his success at Awapuni after a series of failures, the Diacquenod horse looks like returning to his earlier form. Whyte Melville, who promised to do good service for Mr.T. A. Duncan, unfortunately broke down during the ning of the Ongo Hack. The stewards had an easy day, the only matter to claim their attention being an inquiry as to whether Mr WH. Dwyer's sale of Midian to Mrs L. M. Franklin stipulated that the horse should be used for stud purposes only and not raced. After going into the facts of the case the horse was allowed to take its place in the field. The secretary (Mr E. G. Goodbehere) had a busy day, but the meeting proceeded smoothly and the first day's rac- ' ing can be voted a great success. . Fight trajners each had one winning representative, these being W. C. Griffiths, D. T. Marks, J. Fryer L. D. Orange, A- E. Veale, V. H. Colello, L. J. Jarvis and L. G. Morris. L. H. Clifford and C. Carroll shared the ridin" honours, each steering two winners. FAVOURITE CRASHES. Clarion Call, who races in Mr R. Grace's colours, was made a warm favourite for the Kawa Ivawa Hurdles, but he failed to see the journey out, crashing at the hurdle five furlongs from home when going well in front. But for that mistake he would have taken a prominent part in the finish, The only other horse to fall was Tiger Bill about three furlongs from home, but'he was well back and never looked a winner at any stage. Journet, the winner, fresh from his victory at Hastings, was third favourite. The Arausio gelding jumped with, great dash and more will bo heard of him. Gaswyii, second, had a good lead coming' into the straight, but tired in the run home. Invictus, a long way back thud, was never going kindly and failed to repeat his Awapuni form, giving his supporters a bad run. Bacchus Marsh was best of the others, who were a poor lot. FORDELL FILLY SCORES. Boomerang was made a surprisingly good favourite for the Ongo Hack but he had his colours lowered by the l<or-dell-trained filly Bias, whose form at Awapuni suggested an early win. tone took charge a furlong from home and ' scored decisively. Bias is a well-bred filly by Iliad from Limelight, who raced in the interests of the Canterbury sportsman, the late Mr C G. Dallioiy, and among her numerous successes were the Great Autumn Handicap of 1924. Boomerang finished last and looks an early winner. Midacre, who was always one of the leaders, faded away over the last bit, taking third money. Ben Braggie was close up fourth and will be improved by the race. ANOTHER WIN FOR ONEWHETU. Davistock and lied Rufus were missing from the Cup held and Dungarvan was a good favourite from Grateful and Onewhetu. The pace was on all the way. being set by Grateful and taken up later by Dungarvan, and eventually by Onewhetu, whose Winning time, 2.4 2-5, was a record for the event. The favourite went a fine race and was not disgraced. Had he been taken to the front a little later the lesult might easily have been different. Onewhetu finished lull of running and more weight will not stop him. His last six runs have resulted in four wins and a third. There was an exciting tussle for the places, Hunting Cat, Dungarvan, and Round Score finishing in that order with half-heads between them. Hunting Cat came on the scene late and should not be long before winning. Round Score went one of his consistently honest races, but was not quite good enough. Grateful struck trouble in the straight—or he would have been closer than fifth. Peter Jackson made a reappearance after a long absence, but was too big to do himself justice and trailed the field all the way. PREVAIL GOES UNDER. The Fordell filly Prevail was backed like a certainty in the Maiden Stakes, but Maestro, trained at Ashhurst by L. D. Orange, got up in time to beat her on the post by a head. Maestro owed his victory to a stronger finishing run, coming from the back. 11ns was his best effort to date and the Colossus three-year-old should be seen in a favourable light next season. Prevail has now run three seconds on end, two at Awapuni, and such consistenecy should soon be rewarded. Golden Anne improved on any of her 'recent efforts in finishing third, and Trevelyn Hold was a moderate fourth. Trimden, Hunting March and Garter Red will be all the better for a race or two. SPRINT TO DIATOMOUS. Souchong and Beau Gallante did no.t face the starter in the Mangaone Handicap, in which Friesland was favourite, but the winner turned up in the Diacquenod horse Diatomous, whose recent victory at Awapuni was hailed with delight by those who like to see a good horse recover his form. Ihe winner shook Land Tax off ear y and from then on was never troubled. J 1 he retains/ his form oue of the big sprints will not be beyond him Gold Mission Was disappointing, tailing to

( put any dash, into hoi- work down tho straight. This was not her host and ! can bo disregarded. Bazaine raced j solidly and looks an early winner. ■ Friesland, as usual, was fractious at the barrier, but he got away well only to fade • away before going a furlong, the only one to finish behind him being,Land Tax. He scorned a trifle sore, and that may have aoeounted for his poor showing. Altogether the favourite gave his supporters a poor run j for their money. A HOT FINISH. There was a hot finish in the Taonui Nursery between the favourite, Laughing Lass, and Sardius, the latter : prevailing by a nose. The honours of I the race were with Laughing Lass, | who carried her 9.3 like a champion i and gave her conqueror 301 b. riardius was first into the straight followled by Laughing Lass and from then I on there ensued a desperate tussle in which the favourite just failed to get up. She should make a good three-year-old next season. Sardius beat Lacquer, a winner at Tauhorcnikau, at Hastings and prior to that had run second to Karl in tho Sapling Stakes at Napier, with Silver River, a winner at Pahiatua, third. The Tractor gelding should turn out more than useful. The best .performance of the others was Brazen King’s third. This colt was left at the post and he gradually worked his way through to take third money. With an even despatch he. would have been very troublesome. The Bigot made a fair showing for fourth. DONEGAL’S SUCCESS. After two good races at Awapuni it was surprising to find Donegal going out fourth favourite in the Onepu.hi Hack, as his form entitled him to be . better hacked. However, after the first few furlongs, tho Nigger Minstrel gelding said good-bye to those behind him and giving nothing else a chance won as he liked. Hunting Queen ran a sterling race into second place. The 1 daughter of that great winner Enthusiasm, she was making her first 1 appearance for some time and her forward running suggests an early win. Petrarch put up a smart performance for a steeplechaser in finishing third and the winter, season should see him come into his own. The favourite Waipiro, was never sighted and she dis- : appointed a big army of supporters who hacked her on the strength of her i second to Onewhetu at Awapuni. Chile ■ and Muggins, second and third favourites, raced disappointingly, Mugi gins being fourth and Chile sixth. ANOTHER EASY WIN. 1 There was another easy win in the ' concluding race, tho Halcombe Handicap', the filth favourite Liuiulus go- ' ing to the front from the start and winning by four lengths. The duel Ruler mare had bad her hist win at Bulls, but she was just behind the i placed horses at Awapuni when Diatomous, Gold Mission, and company- , fought out a desperate finish in the i Telegraph Handicap. Rust took second money and again found 'Limulus a snag, for 'they clashed at Bulls, where Mr Ourrie’s mare was also second. Jubiloo Song was a fair third and should not be long now. Red Sand ran a good race to got fourth and is an improver. The favourite division, Coronis, Passion Flower, and Beau Gallante, did not run up to expectations. THE DETAILED RUNNERS. KAWA.
