EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD,” APRIL 13, 1905. The balance-sheet presented at a meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the Farmers’ Union showed an income for the year of £53, £4l having been obtained from members’ subscriptions. Two steam navvies, each inquiring a crew of nine, had been acquired for the Main Trunk railway construction work. The Christchurch Exhibition was expected to total 120 acres in area. Cinders were reported to be lying a foot deep in Naples as the result of the eruption of Vesuvius. A lava stream 6b yards wide was approaching a village and rooks were being thrown to a height of 3000 feet. - A large force of natives, under Bambaata. a rebel native chief, had attached a British coloumn in Natal with rifles and assegais. They had been driven off with rifle fire. >
