WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

MAKING BRANCH. A next- institute year was entered upon by the Makino 'Women’s Institute at their monthly meeting, Mrs Mason presiding. Programmes for the year, reflecting great credit tipon the committee who were responsible for all arrangements, were distributed among the members. Several business matters were attended to. It was decided not to send a delegate to the conference to be held in Dunedin next February. All members wishing to attend tlie council meeting in Palmerston North are to advise Mrs W. E. Baker. Notice was received of a meeting convened by the Mayoress of Feilding to enable members of all organisations to meet Mis* Johnson, Sarah Ann Rhodes Fellowship in Home Science. The Hawke’s Bay Chip held by the Makino Women’s, Institute during the past year has been annexed by Twyford, Makino being runner-up. During the evening a letter from the institute link, Senior Women’s Institute, England, was read by Mrs Mayliew.’ A demonstration oil the making of an eiderdown quilt wan given by Mrs J. Sporle (Feilding), members being keenly interested in this art. The competition arranged by Mrs May hew for “One Perfect Flower” was splendidly responded to by members. Mrs Sporle kindly judged' the beautiful blooms, awarding first prize to Mrs Clover and second to Mrs Pearson. The prizes were donated by Mrs Alayhow who intends to run this competition for" the year provided the entries keep up. The junior competition for a. wool worked table-centre was won by Miss Peterson, Miss Thurston being second and the prizes being given by Mrs Petty. A meeting of the drama circle will take place at Mrs W. E. Baker’s residence next week. A roll call. “A cure for the blues,” brought forth a variety of remedies arming members against this depression bogey. Next meeting the roll call will he “A humorous story.” Next month will see-the commencement of afternoon meetings. The competitions will be for the “best bloom from my garden” and sock darning, this to be done a.t the meeting, competitors being given ten minutes. At the end of the year a prize is to he awarded to the member who lias entered for the mest competitions and won the least. The hostesses next meeting will be Mesdames V. Reid, Ritchie, Sandbrook and Sherrard.
