ENGLISH TRAINER.

DEATH OF CHARLES MORTON. Charles Morton, one of tho best-known figures on the English Turf, died in February, aged 81. After a brillant career as a trainer of racehorses he retired in 1926. Pie trainod two Derby, four Oaks, and three St. Leger winners. His two Derby winners were Sunstar, in 1911, and Humorist, in 1921. Sunstar also won the Twc, Thousand Guineas. Morton’s successes in the St. Leger were gained by Your Majesty, in 1908, Black Jester, in 1914, and Tranquil, in 1923. Tranquil was owned by Lord Derby. As the gallops at Newmarket had become

hard, he was sent to Berkshire to complete his preparation under Morton. Two years after his appointment as private trainer Morton won his first classic for Mr J. B. Joel, the Oaks, with Our Lassie, in 1903. He won the Oaks again with Glass 8011, in 1907, Jest, in 1913, and Princess Dorrie, in 1914. Jest and Princess Dorrie also won the One Thousand Guineas.
