HANDICAP SEMI-FINALS. BRILLIANCE OF HAWKE’S BAY I> Polo enthusiasts witnessed some fine play yesterday when the semi-finals of the handicap competition were played at Feiiding in beautiful weather. Feilding A defeated Rangitikei A by a goal, and Hawke’s Bay L> defeated Feilding B by 36 goals to 28 (inclusive of handicaps). The Hawke’s Bay team showed a great improvement, ite combination being very good. RANGITIKEI A v. FEILDING A. The teams were : Rangitikei A (10): J. Duncan, R. P. Simpson, R. McKelvie, J. G. Wilson. Feilding A (10): G. Mcßetli, R. Scott, J. Mackenzie, J. Old. Feilding quickly went to the attack and, from a hit by Old, Mackenzie goaled.—ll—lo. Rangitikei were caught out of position and in a rush to the goal Feilding again scored. — 12 —10. Rangitikei rallied and after some vigorous stick work McKelvie reduced the deficit by one. Rangitikei continued to press, but the defence held good until the end of the chukka. Only one goal was added in the second chukka. Scott doing some. brilliant solo work to again put Feilding 2 up. —l3—ll. Rangitikei missed several chances in the next chukka and had the better of the play, but they could not cross the line. Wilson added a goal for Rangitikei in the next, making the score 13 —12. Bright play followed, both sides putting in some pretty work. However, Rangitikei • were the only ones to score, through a fine piece of concerted play, by Duncan, and the score read 13—13. Rangitikei took the lead when Duncan sent the ball to McKelvie, who made no mistake. —13 —14. Hitting out from their goal line at the commencement of the sixth chukka, Rangitikei were unable to clear and Mcßeth registered an easy goal to make the score even again.—l4—l4. Moving at a good pace, the teams kept at it with little between them, but towards the end, after Rangitikei had failed to goal following a strong attack, Scott carried on the good work of Mackenzie to give Feilding the lead by one goal. — 15 —14. The final chukka was contested vigorously, play moving quickly from one end of the ground to the other. An infringement by Rangitikei saw the penalty shot go behind and Wilson eventually cleared to Feilding’s goal, where his shot at goal also went behind. Mackenzie’s hit out carried play to the Rangitikei goal where a stern battle followed before the defenders could clear and the final bell.came with Rangitikei defeated by one goal.—l5 —14. . Cousins, D. Kilgour, W. Stewart, N. J. Short Feilding started off with a rattle, Cousins and Short scoring in quick succession. —27 —24. Bay were not to be outdone, and the secqnd chukka was easily theirs, Mackenzie and Macfarlane each goaling from some fine combined play.—27—26. Bay .continued to press and put on three goals in the third chukka through the acrenev of Robson, Macfarlane and Gaten'by.—3o—27. They continued to hold the upper hand, their combined play being a treat to witness Robson icored early in the fourth chukka following which Feilding were penalised for a cross, but the penalty hit missed Macfarlane goaled m the melee and, putting on the pace, die Bav team launched a swift attack which saw Robson add another. Down the field to the other goal raced the Bay combination to finish off a nice movement with a goal by Mackenzie —:34—2< - Feilding rallied m the fifth chukka and pressed all the time to hold play around the Bay goal. Only one goal resulted and that was through Stewart who, during the tight play. tapped the willow through to make the score 34—28. Feilding failed to maintain / the pace- in the sixth chukka, the Bay adding two goals through Macfarlane to make the score 36—28. Early in the final chukka Cousins played the willow nicely to the Bav goal, but want of support lost Feilding a sitter ” No further score was recorded and the game ended in an easy victory for Hawke’s Bay. , ■ Messrs N. Scott and F. Mackenzie were the umpires.
