HALCOMBE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) HALGOMBE. .March 18. The junior member's of the HaleomboKakuriki branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held the second of their series of euchre and dance parties in the compound. Their, efforts met with the approval of the large number who gathered from the surrounding districts, and the venture was a success in every way. The president (Miss V. Blunderi), after expressing her gratification at the excellent attendance, presented the following euchre prizes Ladies: Mrs Bevan 1, Airs McNao 2; gentlemen, Mr Bevan 1, Mr VarJan 2. Miss Blunden also expressed the thanks of the members to Mr Fuller for the use of the hall. Miss Potuka and Mr T. Searancke were successful in the lucky Gay Gordons dance and in the Monte Carlo, Mr and Mrs Grant, of Feilding, were the winners. The beautiful cake, made by Mrs Neil Blunden and iced by Mrs J. Bush, went to Mr Horace McFarlane and Mr N. Marshall won the clock presented by Mr Sutcliffe, of Martori. The duties of M.C. wore capably handled by Mr R. Quarrie. Senior Inspector A. F. McMurtric and Inspector E. Crosby, of the Education Hoard, were visitors to the school on Tuesday. '
At the school sports held in Feilding on Saturday the local school secured third place in the competition for schools of under 100 pupils. The colder weather at present prevailing and the shorter evenings have had their effect on the Tennis Club members, who are now seen on the courts on fewer occasions. Entries for the men’s and ladies’ doubles tourney to be conducted next Sunday close with the secretary or the club captain on Saturday evening. The clouds of smoke now to bo seen over the paddocks in this district are elocpient reminders to the local farmers that what has probably been the most annoying harvesting season for many years is now at last finished. For the past two months wheatgrowers have been working hard between the spells of wet weather, to get their stacks threshed before (lie grain became ruined. The burning of the waste straw is the last and most pleasant task the farmer has to perform.
