EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD ” MARCH 19, 1906. A pleasing feature of the Awahuri sports, it was stated, had been the absence of bookmakers. Mr Winston Churchill had hinted that it might bo necessary to repatriate all the Chinese in South Africa. There had been an outcry in certain quarters, French shareholders in the mining companies declaring that their holdings had been depreciated by £8,000,000. . ’ , , The surplus of the American Stool lrust for the year had amounted to £8,500,000. A -meeting of settlers -had been held at Stoney Creek (Whakarongo) to discuss the question of starting a co-operative butter factory. The supply of. 400 cows had been promised. The fifth anniversary of the Palmerston North Emmanuel Congregational Church had been celebrated, the services being very well attended. Palmerston North was to be visited by a party called the Frivolity Minstrels from Napier. There were 40 in the troupe and in Hawke’s' Bay they had raised £2OOO for charities.
