Mr David Hockly, of Hiwinui, had the misfortune to break his leg Jqst week. His many friends will wish him a quick return to his normal duties. Mr W. Lowe Black and Mr E. Whitcombe, J.P.’s, of Palmerston North, are attending the annual conference of the Federation of New Zealand Justices’ Associations in Wellington. The Mount Eden Presbyterian Church is extending a call to Rev. John Allan, of Riccarton, Christchurch. The vacancy A-as caused by the death of Rev. E. J. Tipler in October.
Mr C. J. B. Norwood has been elected president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, which will act as host to many overseas visitors when the congress of Federated Chambers of the British Empire meets in Wellington in October. Mr J. T. Martin has been elected vice-president. For the past sixteen years Mr J. H. Sumner has officiated as organist at the Ashhurst Methodist Church, a period of service for which it is believed he holds the local church record. At the jubilee banquet of the church last night Mr Sumner was accorded an expression of appreciation of his faithful and efficient services.
The -death has occurred of Mr Thomas Herbert Wilson, aged 66, at Te Puke. Mr Wilson was founder and proprietor of the Te Puke Times, which he conducted for 24 years. He was born at Ahiaruhe, nea.r Carterton, his father being a well-known run-holder of the Wairarapa. At an early age lie took up a journalistic career, but about 1897 with his brother engaged in sheep and dairy farming .at Mangahao. After the death of his brother, Mr Wilson again took up journalism, and with Mr H. Green purchased the Independent at Cambridge. Two years later the partnership was dissolved, and in 1912 Mr Wilson established the Te Puke Times.
